The appeal is first accomplished by the organization of the piece. The essay is divided in nine sections based on the type of lie being discussed. Furthermore, the essay is easier to understand when divided in such a way. Historical context is next used, achieving quite a similar purpose to the organization of the piece. For instance, The Attack on Pearl Harbor is brought up when providing an example for groupthink, a type of lie presented in the piece (pg. 165). Because groupthink may be an unfamiliar, perhaps complex, concept for some, this historical context makes the point of groupthink easier to understand, helping the purpose be more accessible and simple. Similarly, the use of anecdotes assists the author in establishing her objective for writing the essay. . An example can be found when author details a time when she found out that some Jewish teachings tell of a woman in the Garden of Eden before Eve and how she felt that she had been spiritually robbed. The first of the two stories I chose to compare and contrast is titled “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and the second story is titled “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence. Based on the information in the article the author’s purpose should be easy to determine. The author states where the term unreliable narrative originates from, and also lists examples of unreliable narratives in novels. For example, “A Gesture Life... The Catcher in the Rye... To Kill a Mockingbird... Lolita.. The Tell Tale Heart” (Wiehardt). Lastly, the author specifies the types of unreliable narrators and the purposes an author has for making the narrator unreliable. Modern literature is known for questioning society and its various conventions. One question that these works often ask is, “What is real?” Some modern authors explore this question by placing their characters within self-constructed illusions that are later shattered by the introduction of reality. Marriages are frequently at the center of this theme, with one spouse crafting an illusory impression of the other. Modern literature demonstrates that a marriage built upon illusion will falter when exposed to reality.
