Consequences of social media on youth In recent years Social media has become a major way of communication among people. People entertain themselves by using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Instagram and many more. No matter where someone lives everyone is using and connected to these social sites. Social media is a term used for interaction between people in which they share and exchange ideas through blogs and social sites. Social media refers as a platform that helps users to connect with each other through internet. Social networking sites also allow people to find and connect with their friends and family members. In today’s society, many businesses are using commercial websites, social media to get known and popular in public. Therefore, social media sites are upgrading constantly. These sites revolutionize the world. Especially, these sites are impacting the lives of the youth enormously. Due to these sites young people face many problem in their lives. Social media sites entertain youth, where as well it has effect on their school success, and relationship status. However, Social Media has both positive and negative impact on youth’s lives. It is important to get in concentration the fact that nowadays social media plays an essential role in everyone’s life specially teenagers’ lives. Youth need to know how to use these sites.definitely, need to know who their friends are and with whom they are chatting. If so, then these sites are safe and
Online social network has gained astounding worldwide growth and popularity which has led to attracting attention from variety of researchers around the world. In Carla Poertner article,”Is Facebook Making Us Stupid,Boring and Insecure?” She is right on target about youth being impacted over social networking. Social media has influenced youths whether it being their motives, lifestyle, or even a choice and ways of their realizations. Although, some will argue saying that social network is a good influence towards young people it is morally wrong due to getting themselves into addiction leading to danger, lack of concentrating in school, even their physical and psychological health. In other words, generations of teenagers and young adults
Social media seems to be changing how we communicate through society. Adolescents are consumed with media for an estimated 7.5-8.5 hours per day (Georgia, 2014; Giedd, 2012). Instead of interacting with each other face to face adolescents are socializing through their phones (George, 2014). The purpose of the paper was to research how social media affects the brain, sleep, and cyberbullying (Lemola, Perkinson- Gloor, Brand, Dewald- Kaufmann, & Grob, 2014; Mills, 2014; Betts & Spenser, 2017).
Hi Vy, looking at the article “Influence of Social Media on Alcohol Use in Adolescents and Young Adults” by Megan A. Moreno, I thought the article was strong in showing how social media can have a negative influence on young adults. I really agree with the authors that alcohol advertisements on social media could be “of particular concern because it can easily reach adolescents and young adults under the legal drinking age”. I think that this quote is a great choice in showing the negative impacts of social media on young adults. I liked how you paraphrased it as “In Influence of Social Media on Alcohol Use in Adolescents and Young Adults, Megan and Jennifer cite through their study about the popular use of social media, that adolescents and
A Teenager’s life is not like it was for their parents. A generation ago, kids went out, hung out, did “stuff”. Now all they want to do is be in their rooms, on the computer or their phone, or both. Texting, sharing, gaming, liking, commenting constantly can’t prepare them for “real life”. This reliance on electronic devices can’t be good. How will they learn to relate to each other, to problem solve, to exist when the power goes out? The enormous amount of time spent online and plugged-in is harmful to a teenager’s development.
Many sources show there has been a significant increase in the use of social media by adolescents. According to Ward (2005), the amount of time that adolescents spend on social media averages 8 hours per day. This represents an increase in online social networking which has had dramatic effects on the interaction and communication among youth (Pantic, 2014). This excessive exposure has also been shown to have multiple negative outcomes regarding general development in adolescents. In fact, research from 2015 shows that in addition to these effects, excessive social networking also causes issues with loneliness, lack of sleep, and lack of proper nutrition and physical fitness (Cyr, Berman, & Smith, 2015). Three especially harmful effects include social anxiety, depression and self-esteem.
Social media is becoming the most common activity of today’s children and adolescent. The Social Networking Sites(SNS) such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, like a virtual community where provide a common platform to
Online social media has gained worldwide growth and popularity through the use of teenagers and young adults which has led to attracting attention from a different variety of researchers throughout the world. Although with time, every generation has come to terms with the changes social network has brought to the world, teenagers and young adults use social media the most. According to multiple research studies in the field of online social networks, they have come to the conclusion that these sites are having a big but negative impact on the lives of the youth.
Visualize this: It is almost time to eat dinner, and the teenagers have not bothered to do their homework because they have been preoccupied with social media all afternoon. They are spending a majority of their time taking pictures and posting them for ‘likes’ to fit in with everyone else, or they are stalking other people’s posts and pictures, wondering why their lives are not as thrilling as the others’ lives appear. Worst of all, kids of all ages are committing suicide after being cyberbullied to the point that they cannot take it anymore. Picturing it now? Regrettably, that describes the scenery of how their generation is now – the effects of social media on young people are horrifying.
Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler and so on. Since the Internet has propagated rapidly, social media have progressed a lot. The generalization of the internet makes us to live conveniently and fast. People are almost using smart phones, i-phones or comfortable devices which can access to internet. These equipments make us to do social network easily. It helps contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It could be, however, abused, if you don’t use properly. Especially, it is important that we understand and regulate the use of social media by young children.
In this modern era everyone is very into social media. Social media has become a part and parcel of everyone’s life. Even kindergarden students have at least a little knowledge on social media. Social media is defined as a relationship that exist between network and people. A very common and widely used example of social media would be web sites for social networking and microblogging. Examples of utmost used social networking sites are “ Facebook ˮ and “ Twitter ˮ. Nowadays coming across kids on social networking sites has become a norm. Social media is used for many purposes which are to exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos. Social networking sites is one of the most preferable medium for expressing
The advancements in technology have created a cyber world that has practically integrated itself into the daily lives of millions of people around the world. Social networking sites provide many benefits from simple entertainment, the basic principle of increasing social skills, to the ability make a living and run a business through the Internet. The numerous benefits of social media will always retain bad publicity for their susceptibility for online predators and identity theft. The downfall of social media is the safety and protection of the users, but most importantly of our youth. Social networking sites create an unsafe environment for children who are naïve of the dangers of the world.
Social networks claim to connect us; however, connections have not gotten any better and are instead turning into anti-social networks; in which you decide to take control or be controlled. Children are using more technology now than they have ever used in the past. All of the negative effects that social media and television is having on adults are far greater when it comes to the developing minds of children. There is no way to know what long term effect technology will have on our children because this is the first generation to have unlimited access. Unfortunately now a days grownups tend to be dependent to these social networks and we make them reachable to children; making the dependence start at an earlier age. Social media is a very enslaving addiction that is increasing day by day, by the result of social circumstances caused by new technologies that help hide situations of personal loneliness or isolation. I believe that everything is good or at least ok with moderation, but when a habit such as the internet and mostly social media are consuming you, affecting yourself, and those around you it has gone from a bad habit to an addiction. No addiction is good and like any other requires a treatment or cure in which we learn to control our anxiety to be connected to the web. Payne mentions that longer use of internet causes great problems since we then are no longer capable of prioritizing in our daily activities. This could
Social media has gone from a great way to stay connected with friends to an obsession that has caused anxiety and depression amongst teenagers. “Researchers have found evidence that people who overuse technology may develop similar brain chemistry and neural patterning to those who are addicted to substances” (FCD Prevention Works). A solution would be setting boundaries on your phone. One should take periodical breaks, turn off notifications, establish phone free zones, set aside certain times to check your phone, have a phone fast, and engage in real human contact. Teenagers’ dependency on social media has caused teens to lose touch with the world going on behind their phones and laptops. This dependency social media has caused social anxiety, depression and an unhealthy need for social media.
Firstly O'Keeffe, G.S. and Clarke-Pearson, K., (2011) state that “Using social media becomes a risk to adolescents more often than most adults realize. Most risks fall into the following categories: peer-to-peer; inappropriate content; lack of understanding of online privacy issues; and outside influences of third-party advertising groups” this shows that social media is being used as a negative way for children and younger audiences to share around inappropriate content and to be affected by other means, as said because they seem to have a lack of online privacy. O'Keeffe, G.S. and Clarke-Pearson, K. are saying that not only the children lack these flaws in social media but so do the parents. “more often than most adults realize.” (O'Keeffe, G.S. and Clarke-Pearson, K., 2011) this clearly states that even adults don’t realise the risks that come with social media. Not all aspects of social media have a negative impact on children, “Social networking can also help shy adolescents have a more non-threatening way to interact with peers because they aren’t interacting face-to-face” (Rosen, 2011). Rosen is telling us that social media actually helps young children: who are shy, communicate and develop with other children and new people all over the world: this could be friends and family.
Some of the top benefits of social media over the years are that it is free to anyone, the content can get out to resources virtually immediately, and it can be delivered to a wide variety of people. For these reasons, communication through social media has become an extremely accessible and convenient way to communicate. It is also popular for those who need to be in contact with others. One example that comes to mind is a teenager who goes away on a trip to visit a friend or family. They can be hundreds of miles away but still talk to their parents as if they weren’t. Another example is a person who is shy and has a hard time making friends face-to-face, social media sites are a great way to meet people and build relationships.
