Drugs affect nearly everybody on this planet. Drugs increase the crime rate in almost any area once introduced and can lead to poverty for some individuals. Drugs can tear communities and families apart, which many of us are oblivious to. Drugs also have many dangerous health risks for users as well as people who indirectly come in contact some drugs. Why do people use drugs? Many drugs give users a euphoric high. This allows them to escape the reality they are facing. Some give into peer pressure and do it because that is what their friends or doing. Some also use because certain drugs are cheaper or easier to obtain than prescription drugs. Drugs some use them to escape pain, others use them for pleasure, and some use them to just fit in. Either way drugs are a harmful substance that may seriously affect the body. Drugs mess with the brain in ways that we couldn’t even imagine. From destroying brain cells that help with critical thinking to destroying cells that give us the ability to feel pleasure. Drugs take the place of our natural body functions of the body. They fool receptors of the body and make it to where our bodies produce less of what we need. Over a period of time this may produce very severe consequences on the body. With all the risks involved with drugs it’s a wonder why some people use them.
Based on the success and failures of the drug policies of the past, what is the best strategy for the United States to implement to help America’s drug problem?
America has been at war for a lot years dealing with drugs in the United States. Law enforcement has been fighting to decrease this drug abuse for almost centuries. Presidents have personally have been trying to find different methods on how to stop this drug war. Unfortunately law enforcement has not been able to win this battle. You could see how they are losing because there been so many cases that involve drug abusers that had to go to get treatment or some even go to prison. This is causing so many problems especially with the drug trade business which sometimes involves violent crimes in different neighborhoods which is only benefiting the organized crime members and the drug dealers. The United States has put so much effort on stopping this Drug epidemic by spending billions of dollars to stop this war. Family members and peers can influence an addict to start using drugs. A high can entertain the bored. People can accidentally get hooked on a drug that was prescribed to them. The reading begins with two different accounts written by anonymous students at the Union College in Barbourville, KY; in these stories, both these individuals shared their personal experiences on how it’s like to live in poverty. In the first story the author goes into detail on how poverty has affected their social standing within society, which in turn affects who they hang out with and how they are treated by the public at large. She gives a personal anecdote of this when sharing about an incident where she got into a fight with another girl over a remark the latter had made, while both were at fault the poorer of the two received a five-day suspension, while the other wasn’t punished at all, it wasn’t until after she returned to school did she learn that the other girl’s father donated large amounts of money to the school. The second experience details the correlation of drug life and poverty, growing up surrounded by drugs and alcohol it wasn’t difficult for the author to get into that lifestyle and before she was buying and selling drugs for profit. Her and her husband attempted to make a normal living, but found it difficult to impossible to do due to limited employment opportunities, without much choice they went back to growing and selling marijuana in order to support themselves
Drug addiction has been happening for thousands of years. It is commonly known that addiction to drugs is poor for your health. However, drug addiction can affect an addict, their family, and their communities. Drug addiction needs more awareness and treatment because it leads to homelessness, crime, and broken families.

Do people ever think about the consequences about drug abuse? Not many of us do but we all know what it does to us.
