That is the definition of civil rights, although when most people think of civil rights they instantly think it means black civil rights.
I HAVE A DREAM! In an era when racial discrimination and public bigotry towards African Americans in the United States was becoming more evident, this simple, but powerful statement by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a beacon of hope for all African Americans in the country. In his speech, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King expresses his frustration that after a hundred years since the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans are still treated like second-class citizens. However, Dr. King also expresses his hope that the status quo will change and African Americans around the country will be “free at last.” Dr. King uses eloquent statements to appeal to his audience’s emotions and

Protesting is one of the many ways to get someone to listen to you, it helps a group of people to easily voice their opinion when they feel something is not right. Protests can either be effective or ineffective based on the way they’re handled. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an advocate for a type of protesting that called for patience and steadfastness over anger and violence. There are many others that have used nonviolence to promote their ideology, such as Henry David Thoreau, Mohandas Gandhi, and Rosa Parks. All their protests worked because they could create sentiment from their argument using nonviolent means. The nonviolent protests used by Dr. King would be effective in these times because they create sentiment, enhance legitimacy and they also show a level of education and maturity from the movement.

Civil rights and the civil rights movement are very important because it is not right and it is unconstitutional to discriminate against someone based on what color their skin is, what religion they have, what country they came from, or any other reason that they did not choose. It is important to remember the bad times of our country so we can make sure nothing like that happens again. Reading about all the civil rights activists, inspires me to stand up for what I believe in and to help those causes. For instance, Rosa Parks, a civil rights leader, stood up for what she believed in and ended up going to jail. This made her work even harder to stop bus segregation. Martin Luther King Jr. went even farther than going to jail, he was shot and killed after bus segregation ended.
