Furniture: Is all furniture inside the classroom in good repair and suitable for the size of the user. This will ensure that pupils are able to sit comfortable when working , maintain good postures and are not hunched over small tables. Permanent fixtures need to be taken into account, are they in good condition and securely fastened, eg cupboards, display boards, shelving. Hot surfaces such as radiators also need to be protected where necessary, to prevent the risk of burns to pupils. Temperature: The heating should be adequate it should not fall below ……. or above ……… Basic needs: There should be access to basic needs such as, toilets washing facilities and drinking water. These need to be located close to the classroom. Safety: All entry doors should be lockable to prevent any un wanted visititors but also allow for an easy exit in the case of an emergency. Outdoor Environment: Security: Any outside area used by children should be secured and boundaries regularly inspected, to ensure the safety of all pupils. Upkeep of the areas used: • It is important that grassy areas should be kept tidy and mown regularly. • Hard ground should be swept and even to avoid any hazards e.g tripping over uneven flag stones. • Rubbish must be removed daily before children are allowed to enter the area e.g litter, broken glass and animal mess. There are a number of important principles to think about when you are planning for healthy and safe environments or activities with children. Most of these are common sense but you need to remember that everyone is an individual and may have different needs. There are several points to take into consideration when planning safety:

* Ensuring the environment is clean – Although the nursery has daily cleaners who clean the nursery at the end of play and who twice a week carry out a deep clean, it is the collected responsibility of all staff to ensure the environment is kept clean throughout the day. This means cleaning up any mess or spillages using the appropriate cleaning tools and products. The practitioners, along with the help from the children, are also required to tidy away the toys and playing equipment, and wipe down tables before each meal time so the area is clear for the arrival of plates, cutlery and food and drinks. This is to ensure a healthy and safe environment when eating.
Other possible hazards are doors and exit points. Doors should have a spring device to close on themselves once they’re open to minimise anyone leaving without being notices, secure stair-gates should be fitted at both ends to minimise falls, and the main entrance should have a secure lock/ buzzer system to minimise unlawful entry or exit.
Any area which will have children/young people playing in should be assessed before any child/young person goes into the area to make sure there is nothing harmful for example any broken equipment. Any issues which are found which may be a risk to health and safety need to be logged and discussed with other members or staff so that everyone is aware of any risks. Having a set guideline of what happens if equipment is broken or damaged, is a good idea so that staff know how to manage the situation and eliminate any future risk.

It is very important to let children asses’ danger for themselves in a secure environment. It is not good for them to be cooped up and have somebody tell them that one thing is bad and will hurt them and another will keep them safe they need to identify these things for themselves to enable them to live a positive life as an adult and to gain confidence in themselves and their own abilities. At the same time the children need to be given this chance in a safe and secure place whereby I as the carer know they will not come into any danger.
When planning a healthy and safe indoor or outdoor environment there are some factors that need to be taken into account.
Include: geography, special features, demographics of the population, and other relevant factors that may come into play in a risk assessment.
