EFFECTS OF CRUSADES According to an article published in 2009, it is believed that there were a numerous effects of crusades: 1. Senseless Violence and wars The mentality was that Christian crusaders were to Islam/Judaism at any costs. It doesn’t matter even if it was achieved through violence or war. During the course of the crusades, the death toll was high for Christians and Muslims. In few crusades, innocent people including women were raped and slaughtered. These victories lead to conquering kingdoms for Christianity but they were all unsustainable especially in the middle east. 2. Undermining Church Moral Authority The effects of crusades which lead to the slaughter of Jews and Muslims were later used as accusation against the Roman …show more content…
This was a bad scene when the Catholics were fighting against the Eastern Orthodox leading to the conquer of Byzantine, capital of Constantinople. This lead to the Turkish Muslims to advance towards Europe which resulted in the fall of Eastern Europe. 5. Asian Influence The crusades resulted in the advancement of European knowledge about Asian world, bringing a more cosmopolitan influence to Europe. 6. Increased Anti-Semitism Their devotion and loyalty to churches were very high that they had very low religious tolerance. As a result, entire Jewish communities were destroyed in Europe with inhabitants killed and some slaughtered. (Fisher) IMPACT OF CRUSADES: Though there were a lot of effects which resulted out of crusades, there were numerous impacts too: 1. Beginning to the end of feudalism The basic structure of government changes as noble class is greatly reduced over the 100 years of the crusades. 2. Kings gain power With a lock of nobles in Europe, Kings take control of more land and make more laws. 3. Trade Explodes Europeans gain access to new goods and markets, and this creates a demand for things like silk, spices, and ivory. 4. Two cultures blend Europeans begin to adopt eastern ways of eating and dressing, and even borrow their weapons and fighting tactics. Muslims do the
The crusades had a negative impact. The crusades was a series of religious wars between the christians and muslims. It started in 1096- 1099 and was caused from muslims because the muslims wanted to take control of jerusalem or they wanted jerusalem back. This caused many buildings to be destroyed and many of people's lives.
The Crusades were an unpleasant event that happened for many reasons. It was established in 1096 and thankfully ended in 1291. The cause for why the Crusades had a more negative result is because most people died from participating or majorly hurt. This is because Document 6 states “The city was savagely taken with many lives lost” meaning that people had died. So, the continued fighting that took place because of the Crusades had a huge negative impact on the many people that lost their lives. In addition, Document 1 states “In Europe, crusaders sometimes turned their fury against Jews, massacring entire communities.” Which meant that full families including children were slaughtered, killed and destroyed because the crusaders were mad at
Did the crusades have a negative or positive effect. In 1095 pope urban the 2nd called the first crusade which was the start of something that would have an Positive effect on the Eastern empire and christianity. In 1905 the byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus asked the Eastern empire for help after being threatened by seljuk turks and to aid the eastern empire pope urban called the first crusade so that they could fight back against the muslims with the Eastern empire and take back the holy lands. This crusade would lead to three more which would have a positive effect on christianity and the Eastern and Byzantine empires. Some positive effects were they found new food this also the crusaders conquered more land for the Eastern empire and found new clothing/material. The results crusades had many positive effects on the Eastern and Byzantine empire. One of which was that many more merchants were supporting them or selling to them and they also discovered new foods from the east. These two things helped the empire by allowing them to find new things through trade which ws increased because of the crusades because the crusaders would need more food and equipment. Document 2 states that “merchants in Venice and other northern Italian cities built large fleets to carry crusaders to the holy lands.” “They later used those fleets to open new markets in crusader states.” This shows that the merchants helped the crusaders and then they opened shops where the crusaders were so that
The Crusades of the High Middle Ages (a.d. 1050-1300) was a period of conquest or rather, reconquest, of Christian lands taken from Muslims in the early Middle Ages. It is an era romanticized by fervent Christians as the time when Christianity secured its honorable status as the true religion of the world. The affect of the Crusades is still with us today. It sailed from Spain and Portugal to the Americas in the fifthteenth century aboard sailing ships carrying conquistadors who sought new territory and rich resources. They used the shield and sword of Christianity to justify a swift conquest of mass territory and the subjugation of the indigenous peoples; a mentality learned, indeed,
The Crusades was a very important moment in human history, it showed the clashes between religions for land that most people considered to be sacred or holy. There isn’t one Crusade but rather a series of them, but we’ll be looking primarily at the First Crusade, Second Crusade, Third Crusade, and a little bit of the Fourth. It all starts in Rome (Nov 27th 1095) where Pope Urban the Second receives an important message from Byzantine Emperor Alexios the First where he pleads for help in supressing the Turkish troops. After receiving the message the Pope (standing in a field outside the city of Clermont) calls for the public to join the military excursion to the Middle East, and swiftly declares a Crusade with the primary objective of securing holy sites [Jaspert, Nikolas. The Crusades]. What followed was a large migration of troops from France and Italy on August and September of 1096. The
The impact of the crusades were more negative because they had bad reasons and because they fought nine times in the 13 centuries and many Christians were fighting against Jews. After the Christians and Jews fought the crusades still attacked each other. It also made lasting war between two religions.
One reason why the Crusades were more negative than positive was because they worsen their own relationship with the Jews and Muslims, or religious hatred, even tho they were bad anyways. Document 5 states that ”First, the long struggle between Islam and Christendom and the example of persecution set by Christian kings and prelates (bishops) left an inheritance of deep bitterness; relations between Muslims and their Christian and Jewish subjects worsened.” (description of some of the effects of the Crusades). This is (important/interesting/relevant) because even if the Christian and Muslims relationship was bad already the Crusades made it worse by the bitterness left and even the Jews now are in it because when the Crusades lost, they took their fury against the Jews and would slaughter and destroy their cities even though the lost against the Muslims. Document 10 states that “...which one of the Franks
The Crusades, a series of wars, are an extremely important part of history in the 12th century, occurring during the Middle Ages. The Middle East or the Holy Land was always a place that Christians traveled to to make pilgrimages. The Seljuk Turks eventually took control of Jerusalem and all Christians were not allowed in the Holy City. As the Turks power grew, they threatened to take over the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople. The Byzantine Emperor, Alexius I, asked Pope Urban II for help and Pope agreed, hoping to strengthen his own power. He He united the Christians in Europe and In 1095, Pope Urban II waged waged war against muslims in order to “reclaim the holy land.”
Going against modern day religious beliefs, in 1095AD the Christians went to war to claim the holy city of Jerusalem, massacring the Muslims in a bloody attempt to worship their God. Pope Urban II’s speech at Clermont inspired by claims made by the Byzantium Emperor encouraged the Christians to partake in the First Crusade in an attempt to liberate Jerusalem. The religious and economic factors were the most relevant to cause this crusade, with some influence from desired political gain and little from social factors unrelated to religion. The immediate consequences were positive for the Christians and negative for the Muslims, but the First Crusade launched an ongoing conflict between the Christians and Muslims which had positive and negative consequences for both sides. There are a number of relevant modern sources which examine the causes and consequences of the First Crusade, but, while there are many medieval sources, they do not explicitly discuss the causes and consequences of the war. In order to fully comprehend the First Crusade, it is necessary to analyse the religious, economic, and political factors, as well as the short-term, long-term, and modern consequences.
(important/interesting/relevant) because while a Muslim man was praying in on of their religious places of beliefs. A person from Eastern Europe ran up to him and tried to correct his natural way of prey to a way Christianas correctly pray. With that said the person showed intolerance as he showed disrespect by disrupting his praying to do it his way. With this said, the Crusades gave an impact with creating a bigger separation and disrespect.
The Crusades were Military campaigns that fought and destroyed many towns and innocent people. For no reason, the Crusades killed, abused and even destroyed people's land for no good reason. The Crusades fought between the Christians and Muslims. The effects of the Crusades were more negative than positive in my opinion. . The crusades left a “bitter legacy” and they also had a bad influence on the Christian community.
In the DBQ historical context, it states that “Between the end of the eleventh century and into the thirteenth century, European Christians, at the urging of the church, conducted a series of nine wars that have come to be known as the Crusades. Many people have wondered were the results of the Crusades more positive or negative? The results of the Crusades were more negative because they would massacre communities and empires, and they had very low patience.
Three of the world’s most powerful religions had gone to war during the Crusades, the same war that is responsible for an estimated 1.7 million deaths. The Crusades were a series of Christian military expeditions that lasted through nine Holy Wars. The first crusade, in 1095, was called upon by Pope Urban II in an attempt to stop the Muslim expansion to the Holy City of Jerusalem. Through this, the Christian, Catholic, and Muslim churches will go into a time of warfare as an attempt to both show their religious superiority and have a religious expansion. The western side of Europe was the most significantly impacted by the Crusades because of the 4th Crusade, the foreign influence from the East, and Europe’s economic relations with the world.
One reason the Crusades had a negative result is the amount of rancor the Christians had on the Muslims and the Muslims had on the Christians.
The Crusades were a failure in their goal of conquering the Holy Land for Christians. They cost a lot to the European nobility and resulted in thousands of deaths. Nevertheless, these expeditions influenced great transformations in the medieval world. They have weakened feudal aristocracy, strengthened royal power, and made possible the expansion of the market. Eastern civilization contributed much to European cultural enrichment, promoting intellectual development. Never again was Jerusalem dominated by Christians, but the movements on the way to the Holy Land expanded relationships with the known world at the time.
