CONFLICTS AND DISPUTES ARE INEVITABLE Conflict is defined as the behaviour due to which people differ in their feelings, thought and/or actions. Collins (1995) states that the conflict is a ‘serious disagreement and argument about something important’ and also as ‘a serious difference between two or more beliefs, ideas or interests’ (cf. Kumaraswamy, 1997, p. 96). In general it is believed that conflicts are the underlying cause of disputes. In other words, dispute is a manifestation of the deep rooted conflict. A dispute is defined as ‘a class or kind of conflict, which manifests itself in distinct, justifiable issues. It involves disagreement over issues capable of resolution by negotiation, mediation or third party adjudication’ …show more content…
So, it is said that a conflict can exist without a dispute but a dispute cannot exist without a conflict (Spangler and Burgess, 2003). Many authors have highlighted the inevitability of conflicts on the other hand it is said that disputes can be prevented or at least can be minimized through proper management. Conflicts are ubiquitous where ever a large number of people are involved i.e. where the human relationships proliferate (Kumaraswamy, 1997). People are the principle resource for any commercial project today. Different project managers, engineers, surveyors belonging to different organizations and having different needs, goals and each of them looking to maximize their benefits are brought together to form a team. Because of these differences in the individuals the conflicts and disputes become inevitable in a project. Conflicts are generally perceived as a negative term but it has both positive and negative sides. Positive conflicts can be helpful to generate new ideas, make innovations, helps people to ‘Be real’ and creative. But this conflict has to be maintained so that it does not get out of control and bring about dysfunctional consequences. There are large numbers of potential sources that makes conflict inevitable in a project. Some of them are explained below: - (scribd) It is stated in the paper that disputes are a short term part of an
Whether we like it or not, conflict is a part of everyday lives. It can happen to anyone, from your friends to your family.
Conflict is an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals (Baker-Brown). A conflict can only exist if both parties are aware of the disagreement (Alder 381). This is known as an expressed struggle. An expressed
In our world conflict is an issue no human can avoid. Whether hearing about it through the news or through a trusted source, or simply just experiencing it in daily lives. Conflict in my definition is when there is a disagreement or problem at stake and an issue forms. For example a conflict can be as little as a small argument of opinions or a fight about toys between siblings, to as immense as a war starting or starvation in certain countries. Conflict can be emotional, or it can be physical, like a fight. Conflict has happened all over the world. Conflict is what starts wars and can create chaos among humans. This is similar to the disagreements that took place during a quarrel between the Native Americans and the non-natives coming into what was the Washington territory. The conflict that happened between these different cultures was both
Conflict occurs in our everyday lives through the major decisions we make. For example choosing whether to have a child or through the minor decisions like whether to have a mocha or a chai latte.
Conflict theory is a rather ambiguous theoretical example in sociological thinking. This theory was born in the 1950s by many sociologists like Lewis Coser and Ralf Dahrendorf. These sociologists and many others joined terms such as, phenomena of power, interests, coercion, and conflict to form this theory. In other words, Conflict theory is mainly about power divisions and class struggle lead to conflict. This theory plays an important role when it comes to sociological studies, since it proves that sociology also has focus on phenomena of power and conflict. Since conflict theory is mainly about class struggle, one important type of conflict theory is the Marxism Conflict theory. As stated before, this theory has led to many important
Step 1. Bring to mind a specific situation in each of the conflict style categories noted.
Management of conflict is the most common outcome but resolution of the conflict is recommended. “Although management is the most likely conflict outcome, it can be problematic when conflicts become serial arguments” (Bevan, 2014).
Conflict presents in various forms which occur in many situation and both willing or unwilling affect
According to Webster's Students Dictionary1, conflict is a clashing or sharp disagreement. We see conflict in our everyday lives. Although it may not seem like it, even the smallest of argument is a form of conflict. A minor disagreement could include which type of pizza is better, Hawaiian or Pepperoni? Another example is when a group of people disagree on what sport is better, baseball or football? A major conflict could be how Governors in the United States don’t agree on what is good and bad for our nation. There are some ways that people can resolve a problem..
Conflict is a serious disagreement or argument that can happen often. The result of a conflict depends on how high the situation escalates. Me and my little brother get into conflicts pretty often over dumb things. Usually when my brother and I get into a conflict we get in trouble for fighting and get things taken away or end up getting grounded. In other instances, with my friends we stop talking for a little while and eventually get over it and start talking again. A great example of this in my life is me and my friend Quincy. Once when we were talking about my bike accident that I had like 7 months ago he said it was a gap. I said it wasn’t and then we got into a conflict about it. Their fore we stopped talking for like two weeks and then
Conflict manifests itself into many shapes and forms. Conflict can be defined as a struggle or contest between individuals or parties for power. The struggle ultimately changes the status quo and brings about an imbalance in the existing situation. The change in the status quo could be either positive or negative. In Finding Forrester composed by Gus Van Sant, The poem, “Then and Now”, by Oodgeroo of the Tribe Noonuccal and the article on Mahatma Gandhi by Ravi Kumar we find that conflict manifests itself into Inner, Moral and Socio-economic forms, amongst others.
The interactionist, conflict and functionalist theories have been extensively used to guide the sociological understanding of social problems. The different views presented by these theoretical approaches are critical not only in understanding but also in resolving the various social issues. Poverty presents as one issue that every society has to grapple with given its inherent tendency to pose a threat to not only the poor but to the society as a whole (Mooney, Knox & Schacht, 2014). The issue of poverty can always be argued from different sociological perspectives. The functionalist theory claims that social stability is critical and is at the center of adequate socialization and a healthy society. Social integration is viewed as a vital
A conflict can occur when one has a different set of values, opinions, and solutions. This can lead in an overall disagreement between individuals, groups, or within oneself. A conflict can be both desirable and undesirable. The conflict might favor some individuals, well not favoring other. Other times the resolution of the conflict can come to a common ground were both parties benefit. Finally the conflict may not be resolved and no one benefits.
Conflict is inevitable phenomenon on commercial project but dispute can be avoided, too much conflict and dispute will break the function of the project organization, whereas too little conflict and dispute can make the project organization ossified.
As human beings, we are caught up daily in a complex web of social and commercial interactions. For as long as these interactions continue, interests are bound to clash. When interests clash or are in completion with the interest of others then we can say a dispute has arisen. For as long as humans exist there will be disputes.
