Angela Idowu 4/29/2015 BIOL242 4 pages Pg.1 Case Study #1 The Hot Tub Mystery Part 1. 1. What Observations did the Paramedics make? The paramedics noticed the empty wine bottles outside of the hot tub as well as the temperature of the water was hotter than they thought it should be. 2. List the questions raised about this situation or that you think that the investigators should ask of the maid. Questions for maid: “were you here last night?” “There were empty wine bottles found around the tub, that you know of, did Mr. and Mrs. Underhill have a history of drinking and using the hot tub simultaneously?” “Have either of them been acting strange or have had any abnormal behavior?” Are you aware of any health issues or medications that …show more content…
Excessive alcohol use can also weaken the heart muscle and cause blood flow changes, and even a condition called cardiomyopathy. The pancreas can also be effected by alcohol consumption and secrete enzymes internally instead of sending them to the small intestine. This will cause inflammation (pancreatitis). Kidneys are effected by alcohol consumption in that when heavy amounts are consumed, the kidneys increase their urine output and are so busy ridding the body of the excess fluids that it cannot regulate the distribution of sodium, potassium and Chloride ions. 5. How fast is alcohol metabolized? The body can metabolize alcohol at the rate of .015 of bac every hour. Or about an ounce of liquor an hour (1 regular drink) Pg. 3 6. What are the effects of a .20 BAL on a 160lb man and on a 120lb woman? Women have a different physiology than men. However .20 BAC is .20 in either men or women. Now the AMOUNT of drinks taken to get to that point would be more or less depending upon the weight gender of the individual. A 160lb man would have to consume more (double the number) drinks than a 120lb woman in order to maintain an equal BAC as her. Now the physiology of a woman is different in that women tend to be less hydrated than men and weigh less. As she consumes alcohol she will be effected quicker as well as not need to drink as much. A normal 160 lb man in general is more hydrated and doesn’t react or process the alcohol as quickly. Thus
He remembered reading a Consumer Product Safety Commission flyer on hot tubs and wondered if the tub
*Sex: If a woman drinks the same amount as a man, she will tend to have a higher BAC. * Body mass: Alcohol becomes more concentrated if people have a larger body mass. This means their blood alcohol concentration will be lower as a result. * Body fat: People a higher body fat percentage are usually prone to having a higher BAC. This is because fat cannot absorb alcohol like other types of tissue. Low blood alcohol concentration: The effects of low blood concentration can be felt at a BAC of about 0.03-0.05% and may include light-headedness, relaxation, and a release of inhibitions. Most drinkers experience mild euphoria and become more social.
1) The paramedics on the scene observed empty bottles of wine around the perimeter of the hot tub. The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Underhill lie at the bottom of the tub which had a noticeably above average temperature. The couple was determined to have been dead long before the paramedics arrived. It was also mentioned that Mr. Underhill had taken Lasix before entering the hot tub.
3. “It depends on each person’s individual circumstances such as weight and body type” (Connolly).
1. The paramedics found empty wine bottles on the ledge surrounding the hot tub, and the bodies of Roma and Clint Underhill on the bottom of the hot tub. The water of the hot tub seemed way too hot and the Underhill’s had both been dead for a while when the paramedics arrived.

The following study is to establish whether there is an increase in the heart rate of healthy female individuals.
Even though this is the standard, the weakness of this method is that it doesn’t take into account the age, height, and weight of the individual nor any underlying medical conditions or medications they may have that could askew this standard number of drinks that can be had. For instance, a thirty year old, two hundred pound female will metabolize alcohol better than an eighty year old woman who is only ninety pounds. It takes roughly one drink per forty pounds of body weight per hour to make a person’s blood alcohol level reach zero point zero eight percent, and it takes about an hour for the body to metabolize one standard drink. So another way to define what moderate drinking means is by vaguely defining it as moderate drinkers do not drink to get drunk (Moderatedrinking.com, n. d.).
Some may have more food in their stomach than others.(Langone, Book 45) Food becomes a big factor when you are drinking. (Langone, Book, 45) If you have a lot of food in your stomach to absorb the alcohol, instead of it being absorbed into your blood stream, then you won't be intoxicated as fast. (Langone, Book, 45) Weight can also determine your tolerance and speed of intoxication(Langone, Book 45) Since our bodies are 70% water, alcohol is diluted some. A small person has less water for the alcohol to dilute in than someone who is bigger. (Langone, Book 45) A single drink may even be all it takes to impair judgment. (www.alcolimit.com November 27) Some people believe that by becoming a "seasoned" drinker they are more tolerant to the alcohol they put into their bodies.(Langone, Book, 85) However being a seasoned drinker does not make you use to alcohol because you can become seriously impair by even the smallest quantities.(Langone, Book, 85) The effects of alcohol is different among all people depending on size, weight, time and amount of alcohol consumed.
The amount of alcohol that can be biologically processed and its effects differ between sexes. Equal dosages of alcohol consumed by men and women generally result in women having higher blood. Targeting adolescents and young adults is regarded as an important step to reduce the harm of alcohol abuse. Increasing the age at which licit drugs of abuse such as alcohol can be
Some people may think: 'it's only one glass, it's not that bad' However, ethanol enters your body in 5-10 minutes, meaning you still will get slower in your movements, even if just by a little bit.
Contrary to our findings, this study’s analysis provided evidence for sex differences that could contributions to an energy balance, patterns of EI and weight changes. However, this study has used different methodologies and subject group to carry out their investigation which may have led to this variance in results.
