The book Out of This Furnace is a work of historical fiction written by Thomas Bell, in which the lives of four different individuals are told and woven together, and consequentially describe the changes taking place in different generations of immigrant workers in America. Beginning with Kracha, then leading to Mike, then Mary, and finally Dobie, this book does an excellent job of showing how the American immigrant's life changed mid 1800s to the 1920s. As seen in each generation, immigrants became as a whole more and more liberal in their beliefs and lifestyles. Many of their beliefs change, however, one of the most interesting is the development of the labor unions, and how they are viewed by the workers in that time period.

Marlee watched as the first visitor approached the door from the upstairs window. He was sitting upstairs cooking shrimp in a pot of oil. He was kind of confused to see a crazed person approach the abandon house at 9 p.m. This visitor looked old and weary. It was an old lady who was carrying a purse, while she was walking up to the house she took out a key like she lived there. Marlee was so scared he thought he was in the wrong house. He quickly called Max and told him to get over to the house right away! The old lady walked inside and started to walk up the stairs. In William Faulkner's "Barn Burning," Faulkner has chosen to tell his story through the point of view of a small boy, Sartoris Snopes. By choosing Sartoris’ viewpoint , Faulker has enabled the one person who was both closely affected by Abner's behavior and had the power to do something about it. It's not unusual to tell a story from a child's point of view, but on the surface this would not seem to be a child's story, and even from the first page of the story Sartoris is a victim of his fathers actions. Thus, by choosing Sartoris instead of Abner the author has brought in a different narrator, which makes the reader see things in a different way.

Life presents itself easily when trials and tribulations are absent from the daily events. However, life’s defining moments tend to ensue due to the presence of toils. Anne Bradstreet’s Here Follows Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th 1666 proves this true. During the night ferocious flame devoured her home and other worldly possessions.
Both of the poems "The Flesh and the Spirit" and "Upon the Burning of Our House" by Bradsheet reflects the vision of Puritanism. In the poem "The Flesh and the Spirit"; she personifies Flesh and Spirit having their own view towards the meaning of life. Here, Flesh is more concentrated towards the materialistic possessions whereas Spirit on the other hand, values and looks forward to deeper meaning towards the life. Similarly, "Upon the Burning of Our House" simply talks about the realization that all worldly possessions turn to dust and real treasures lie above all such worldly possessions.

This is when Mitya enters the picture, as an affiliate of the secret police who wants to avenge Kotov for his actions during the Revolution and for marrying his love, Marusia. All this
