The novel “Night” was written by Elie Wiesel and is a memoir of his life during World War II. The book starts with his life living in Hungary with his family. It then tells of how they were taken away to concentration camps throughout the war. During Elie’s stays at the various camps you see the sacrifices he makes and how the experience changes him. The setting of “Night” is Eastern Europe and during Nazi rule between the late 1930s and the mid 1940s. This is the start of the climax and goes through Elie being hospitalized and almost killed because he was bedridden. Once recovered his father starts to fall ill causing Elie to make tough decisions about survival and family. Elie spends time trying to figure out what to do about survival and his family, and during that his father dies relieving a burden off of him. After his father died Elie stayed at the concentration camp Buchenwald until a resistance group in the camp took control and drove out SS officers who were patrolling the camp. All the prisoners then were freed after the liberation of the camp. This book interested me because it is a great example of what so many people went through in concentration camps throughout Europe in World War II. So many books have been written about personal accounts of war hardships suffered by the Jews but so few capture the true problems faced by prisoners. The impossible decision between survival and family was a difficult one faced by many during this time. Elie had an unfaltering will to live when his father was alive with him but once his father died the reason for living disappeared. But he once was faced with the decision of helping to keep his father alive or let him die and have an extra ration of food. How can one be stuck with a decision like this and not choose survival? Only true unselfishness can cause you to help someone
From the time where Elie had to decide to fight for his father’s life, to the time where he questioned his beliefs, Elie has had to make many life-changing decisions. As some of his decisions left negative consequences, some were left a positive outcome. In the end, all the decisions Elie had made in the camps has made his life miserable or at its best. For better or for worse, the events that Elie encountered makes his life unforgettable as realizes there was more to life than he had thought of
About two-thirds of Jewish people living in Europe at the time of World War II were killed by Nazis. Elie Wiesel’s novel, Night, is about a teenage boy who was taken with his family to Auschwitz and through many of the other concentration camps. Night walks you through all the horrible and tragic events that Elie and all the other people had to endure. In Night, Elie Wiesel uses several powerful, sad, and horrifying images to demonstrate some of the horrors that occurred during the holocaust.
Elie remained in Auschwitz until April 5th, when the wheel of history was turned. America finally thought the lives of Jews was just as important as the ones living in their nation; but life did not get easy for Elie, "But now, I no longer pleaded for anything. I was no longer able to lament. On the contrary, I felt strong. I was the accuser, God the accused." Elie was placed in a hospital, very ill with death knocking on his door waiting for his arrival. "One day, I was able to get up, I decided to look at myself in the mirror on the opposite wall. I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me." Coming so far and then expecting death is a thought no one should ever have cross their mind. Even when free, the battle was still being fought. Those memories are forever in his mind. The corpse standing in front of him will haunt Elie throughout life. With freedom came confinement of all thoughts, sights of deaths and smells of burning flesh through those five years in a living hell for all
In the midst of the worst time at the camp, Elie finds something that gives him a small, but strong amount of hope. Elie remembers, “I shall always remember that smile. From which world did it come?”(Wiesel 86). Elie’s thought process becomes that if she can smile so beautifully at a time like this, I should be able to have faith and hope at any point during my journey. When hard times fall on Elie, he explains his feelings. Elie reflects on an event, “But I had no more tears. And, in the depths of my being, in the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I have searched it, I might have found something like-free at last!”(Wiesel 106). Elie now feels as if now his father is gone, that he has a weight lifted. It shows that his faith is strong and that he can survive easily now while not having to care for his ailing father. As a result of the oppressive environment of the concentration camp, Elie discovers that he is so concerned about his own survival that he no longer cares for the plight of
One internal conflict Elie experienced was the loss of all of his family. While he was in the concentration camps, he and his father were the only ones in his family that were left. “My hand tightened its grip on my father. All I could think of was not to lose him. Not to remain alone,” which was stated on page 30, explains how he and his father were all that were left and his father would have to be there for Elie during that time. They fought hard together through the cold nights
Night by Elie Wiesel focuses on 15 year old Elie’s experiences during the Holocaust. Elie endures circumstances which are so extreme to the point they are almost unbelievable. Elie’s account of his experiences during his life in the concentration camps has taught readers around the world about how to appreciate everything they take for granted, how desperation can make people do crazy things, and the importance of motivation in tough times.
Night starts out with the normal life of teenage Elie Wiesel, a Jew in Sighet, Hungary. He studies the Torah and the Kabbalah, two Jewish texts. Then the Nazis take over Hungary and enforce their anti-Semitic laws. The laws get more and more restrictive on the Jews. Eventually all the Jews in Sighet are forced into small and cramped ghettos. Soon after they were put in the ghettos they began to be put in cattle cars and shipped off on a long journey to a location unknown by Elie and his fellow Jews. After numerous days in the cattle cars the group of Jews arrive at Birkenau, the entrance to Auschwitz. They go through a selection and the men are separated from the women and Elie’s family is split up. Then they were shaved, and cleaned, and stripped of everything they own, even their humanity in the eyes of the Nazis. Elie is left with only his father and his determination to survive.
