The biopsychosocial model and the biomedical model are long-standing theories that describe how an individual's mental state affects their physical health. The biomedical model has been used in Western medicine for a longer time compared to the biopsychosocial model. However, the biomedical model health in a fashion that separates physical health and mental health. This model says that the two do not interact with each other in any way that will affect illnesses. The biopsychosocial model connects physical and mental health saying that they do have an effect on each other. Poor physical health can lead to poor mental health, and vice versa. This paper will describe what each of the models are, how they are used in today's medicine field, as well as compare and contrast the models to each other. The …show more content…
The biopsychosocial model has become more accepted in recent years as physicians and psychologists have discovered how environmental factors influence health. While both are scientific models, the biomedical model is more focused on developing new medicines and cures to treat illnesses while the biopsychosocial focuses on better ways to properly diagnose patients (Engel, 1980). In this way, the models interact with each other. The biomedical model will discover the biological issues that can be cured, which allows the bipsychosocial model to properly diagnose individuals and give them the correct treatments. While the biomedical model and the biopsychosocial model have their differences, they are both accepted by today's society. The biomedical model does not include factors other than biological ones, while the biopsychosocial model does include them. They both involve science, but the biomedical model is more treatment based, and the biopsychosocial model is based on diagnosing patients. Physicians and psychologists may use both models to properly diagnose their patients and provide them with adequate
In today’s modern society we commonly accept both biomedical model and biopsychosocial model, both in which are representation of the health we commonly consent. When comparing the two we need to understand the main difference and benefits within both. The assumptions that Biomedical holds are that a person’s health is solely related to their biological make up and their genetics. Throughout the following essay I will be comparing and contrasting both biopsychosocial model of health and biomedical model of health.
Biopsychosocial model consists of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that determines mental health illnesses. The diagram shows the overlapping of the circles which conveys that the interaction is the determinant not just the simple existence of these theories.
On this week I read and learn about the biomedical model, a model that regards the illness as it is, it doesn't take into account the role of social factors or individual subjectivity. Do not matter why people are sick or how they got sick, the biomedical model focuses only on factors purely biological and says that people are not responsible for their illness, and the physicians are responsible for the treatment.
A doctor will use this assumption and move forward and treat and diagnose patients solely biologically. A psychologist would not use this model at all. The biopsychosocial model assumes everything in life is related to health (Hatla, 2009). A psychologist would use this and look at a patient’s whole life to diagnose and
The biopsychosocial (BPS) model examines the interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors that affect an individual’s behaviour and attempts to explain the reasoning behind its development. The model was proposed by Engel in 1977, as an extension to the biomedical model. He argued that social and
For example, the ‘bio’ contributing factors include genetics. The ‘psycho’ aspects of health and illness were described in terms of cognitions, emotions and behaviours such as smoking. The ‘social’ aspects of health were described in terms of social norms of behaviour, such as the social norm of smoking or non-smoking, social values, social class and ethnicity and therefore, this is important in understanding health behaviours. The biopsychosocial model advocates for good mental and emotional health in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, the biopsychosocial model assumes that all mental illnesses are, in fact, biopsychosocial.
In the light of my knowledge the most accurate model to identify the etiology of psychological disorders is biopsychosocial model/perspective. This is the only model which accounts that psychological illness is the combination of biology, psychology and sociology. This interconnected spectrums of combinations provides the evident based understanding to diagnose the psychological disorders.
The medical model is a reliable view of psychological disorders. It first came about as an alternative to superstitions. People were labeled as ill and were then treated with more sympathy and less hatred. Patients got the treatment and care that they needed. The stigma that they were somehow at fault for their illness was gone. Helpful medical terms are used to better communicate with patients and the rest of the population. In the medical model symptoms point out abnormalities, symptoms and signs can then lead to a diagnosis. The proper diagnoses is very important to the medical model. With the correct diagnosis it can point out the prognosis, the course of the illness, which can direct doctors to the proper treatments. If you know what the
The biopsychosocial model describes the state of someone’s mental health, the model helps individual better understand each other the best part about the models is helps to create better understand amongst people. It displays a clear dialog of many biological, psychological, and social factors. I have a friend who just recently graduated from college that wasn’t very social able I know that may not be a big deal when I say very social able because people not wanting to associate with other people is quite normal but to not no know how out feeling ashamed or guilty is very rare. My friend by the name of Jane grew up in two parent house hold like many other individuals her father and mother were very well know leaders in the community, but their
In the biopsychosocial model the biological refers to the genetic factors, the psychological refers to the emotional and behavioural factors and the social refers to environmental factors as shown in the mind map
According to the Biopsychosocial Model, which is a dynamic interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors, our health is determined by the three following factors.
The biopsychosocial approach methodically considers the complex interactions of psychological, biological and social factors as they relate to an individual’s health, illness and delivery of health care.
The factors discussed in the biopsychosocialspiritual approach all are valid areas of concern, however, in my opinion the most important two would be social and psychological. I would rate these two factors above the others simply because the social aspect of life has an incredible impact on how a person forms their views on themselves as well as other individuals. The psychological aspect of this approach is substantial since a person response to society can be hindered by their mind state. For example, if an individual is depressed they will interact with people differently than if they are not depressed.
The BioPsychoSociol model is important because it integrates biological, psychological and sociology factors to help us understand human functions and explain why human beings do certain behaviors/illnesses.
Health as a discipline is studied under two main perspectives. This scientific based perspective provides and influence explanations, thereby guiding thinking, research and problem solving in certain fields. The two contrasting view points about health are the biomedical model of health and the biopsychosocial model.
