Throughout the course, I got better at analyzing articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if needed. Overall, the essay seemed to lack flow as a result of a noticeable absence of transition words. The essay had bad syntax. Each paragraph seemed to be scenario after scenario and each sentence seemed to be idea after idea. For example, in the first paragraph, the list consisted of multiple sentences, instead of just one sentence with commas. “But they are few: Being mistaken for a wheat field by a cloud of locusts. After the Mexican Revolution, which took place from 1910 - 1920, Mexican art saw a change in the type of art being created. Although the focus of creating art with an indigenous and Mexican theme continued, the country saw a shift to art presenting socialist ideals. The government saw value in working with local artist and commissioning them to create murals that would influence their political agendas. However, what these murals mostly did was strengthen the Mexican culture and bring pride to the indigenous heritage. Although this time period has come and gone, its influence over Mexican art and culture is still very apparent today and can even be seen in Mexican American communities today.

Located in Mexico City a lot can be find influencing their art, shops, renowned museums and very good tasty restaurants to modern life, as well showing their ancient art of the ancient civilizations, and ancient culture. The earliest real civilization in Mexico was the Olmec culture which came from of the Gulf Coast from around 1500 BCE.

The reason I think Chiapas Paz Mexico mural at City Lights bookstore on Jack Kerouac alley is art because the artist communicates with the viewers by using art theory such as color theory, lines and shapes, and composition on his mural.

Ancient Mexico is a grandiose mural which represents the main events of Mexico’s history from the Pre-Columbian Period to Modern Time. The inspiration came to Diego Rivera, from the nationalist movement of his country. Therefore, the mural elements are prototypical of the painting style’s era. Physically the mural is located on the stairway of the Mexican National Palace, in Mexico City; which is the place where the Presidents work. This mural was commissioned at the end of the Mexican Revolution by the federal government. Moreover, this masterpiece depicts its era, considering that this was the dominating genre in the 1920’s, among the Mexican painters.

Mexican artists, more than most other artists in the Americas, exemplify the political and social obligations of artists. According to Soltes (2011), several Mexican artists of the early twentieth century were inspired by the revolutions and political unrest occurring in Mexico, which was reflected in their work. Diego Rivera (1886-1957) considered one of Mexico’s Renaissance artists, influenced by European avant-garde style, painted Zapatista Landscape (1915). This work was done as Rivera’s tribute to the Mexican revolutionary “Emiliano Zapata who had played a key role in the 1910 Mexican Revolution that had overthrown the then President Porfirio Diaz” (Soltes, L43, 4:42). Soltes (2011) describes this work: “very clearly we see a rifle; we see it's a sarape, together with a very stylized backdrop of water, mountains and sky, punctuated by a work that seems largely to emulate the synthetic cubist style of Picasso and Braque that we've earlier discussed. One has the allusion indeed, that we are looking at a collage of geometric forms made of diverse materials imposed against that background of vague sea and sky”(L43, 4:13).

One of my most favorite artists is the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. She was born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon in Coyoacan, Mexico, July 6, 1907 and died July 13, 1954. She was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent. Frida Kahlo is the most famous Mexican woman artist on the contemporary art scene. In 1922, Kahlo hung out with a group of politically and intellectually like-minded students. The Mexican mural movement begins. Frida first learns of Diego Rivera, who is painting his mural "Creation" at the school 's lecture hall. Kahlo becoming a painter, was not a part of Frida 's career goals. Her goal in life was to become a doctor but a tragic accident at age 18 left her mentally and physically scared for life. It changed the course of her life forever. It was during her months of convalescence that Frida began to take painting seriously…"to combat the boredom and pain". she said. "I felt I still had enough energy to do something other than studying to become a doctor. Without giving it any particular thought, I started painting." It was the beginning of a life-long career for Frida.

A beautiful dark-skinned brunette stands before you. Her long, flowing hair beautifully frames her sweet face and demure smile. Yards of richly colored clothing adorn her tall, slender frame. Rays of sunlight appear from behind, emphasizing pure beauty. Her hands are joined together and she holds them at her chest in worship or, perhaps, in gratitude. Who is she, or rather, who do you see? Practicing Catholics all over Central and South America see a venerated patron saint. In Mexico, she is immediately recognizable as symbolic mother of a nation, ‘nuestra madre.’ New generations of mestizos see a symbol of all that is woman, as real and complex as their mothers, sisters, daughters, and lovers.

One thing that I notice in my first project is that I was very repetitive all throughout. I kept saying the same thing over and over in different words, which did not add anything to my argument. Instead, it filled my essay with empty paragraphs that I had to get rid of when writing the final draft. I believe that I have improved on that because I did not notice this problem in my other projects.

A Chicano/Chicano is someone of Mexican decent or born in Mexico, but are residents and citizens of the Unites States. From the power point I learned that there are four different criteria in Chicano art that help express the culture of Mexican Americans. Expose oppression, rewrite Mexican American experiences into history, Create social and racial pride and showing and oppositional way of thinking. I also learned about some of the history behind Chicanos and how it all started with the Chicano movement in the 1960. They wanted to raise awareness about the inequalities and discrimination that many Mexican Americans had to phase. Chicano used art as a form of spreading awareness to their communities as well as using art to represent their culture.

Many more organizations such as Casa Aztlan, were created such as mujeres Latinas En Accion, The Mexican Museum of Mexican Arts ( formerly known as The Mexican Fine Arts Center) and ElevArte (formally know as Pros Arts Studio). These organization provided programs around the needs and wants of the community for the Mexican and first generation population. They provided the neighborhood with a sense of belonging and Mexican pride by creating the notorious Mural Movement in the City of Chicago by representing social and economical issues that the residents were facing and promoting for a change.

Another error of my writing process was not having a clear and specific thesis statement. I would often combined to many thoughts and ideas all in one sentence, which made it very difficult for readers to understand my main argument. For example, in my fourth essay about performance-enhancing drugs, my thesis “Athletes are constantly recognizable to the public eye; their actions can affect the children and adults for whom they serve as role models, which is why many athletes depend on the use of performance-enhancing drugs to better their performance,” was very vague and was not the main focal point of the essay which it should have been. In recent years prior, I never had any problems trying to convey my message or point. College was entirely a different league. My professor suggested that I read other research papers to better understand how my thesis should sound and be constructed. My professor then told me that I needed to add that explanation into the paragraph so the reader can understand exactly what I am trying to get across with

Mostly I struggled with the MLA format, using multiple source , and my thesis statements. For example, in essay 3 my thesis statement was “In society, it has been a cultural idea for years that females cannot do male things.” I could have made that better and told a story to have the reader more excited about hearing what I was going to say next. The things that came easily to me are the body paragraphs, organization structures, supporting details, using correct grammar, and my conclusions. For example, in essay 1 my conclusion said “All in all, I feel as if the word holds a certain importance to me now that I use it so much. I don’t like anybody outside my friend group to use it the way we use it because I feel we should always claim ownership to the way it’s used right now. There are some people outside of my friend group that has caught onto it and now use it daily, but as long as they know who originated the way it is used I guess it will be fine. My friends and I are just different in a way where we don’t do what everyone else is doing and like to start stuff on our own for each other to use or benefit from. We are pretty far from normal, but we just like to set trends and not follow the trend. I believe that is what will lead us to the path of success in the future.” I feel I do a good job wrapping everything up I talked about in the essay and provided a good closure for my audience.
