Acme County Office of Schools is the fourth largest county office in the state of California. It services 50 school districts and approximately 250,000 students in the Acme County through academic programs, career and technical education and the arts. They are mandated by the government to safeguard the financial activities of those school districts to be accountable and comply with the state and federal laws for funding they receive. That internal framework would also create a moral compass to guide behavior and decision making for everyone.
In establishing the core values of professionalism, education, fairness, social responsibility, servant leadership and trust it would create an ethics plan for the Acme County Office of Schools. Those core values would be used as the catalyst to support ACOS in the mission of ensuring the success of the students of the Acme County. Furthermore the core values would strive to help the employees to use ethical thinking as the basis of their decision making and actions within the organization. In doing so it would create a culture within the organization of accountability for its core values and overall purpose.
Professionalism
As a governing body for the school districts the expectation of professionalism is mandatory. Professionalism encompasses the characteristics of accountability, promise keeping, trustworthiness, objectivity and responsibility all of which should be exemplified by all employees (Kleiner, 1997). Professionalism is not only distinguished in the level of competency an employee possesses, but also in the manner in which they conduct themselves as representatives of the organization.
Most of the interaction of ACOS employees is with the district and not directly with the students and the communities they serve, however it is still necessary for ACOS employees to exemplify respect, competence
The textbook describes the characteristics of professionalism to be accuracy, courteousness and respectfulness, dependability, flexibility, commitment to lifelong learning, tactfulness accountability, positive attitude, and a professional appearance. In the following paragraphs I will describe five characteristics that I find important in professionalism.
Based on my experience in the classroom and my educational background, I want to pursue a certification as a K-12 administrator because I want to help and work with a larger population of students. My desire to enhance the culture and community in a school building has come from working with three amazing, passionate, and dedicated administrators (one principal and two vice principals) in my school building. Their drive to positively influence the lives of students, collaborate with parents, and enhance the teaching styles of all the faculty members in the building, has motivated me to want to do the same. A new challenge is presented every day in a school building, and I want to be part of an administrative team that will successfully work together to overcome each and every obstacle in order to better the educational experience of students.
Blatchford (2013) identifies that regarding professional conduct, a teacher is expected to show high standards, uphold public trust, act within the statutory frameworks, and have a proper and professional regard for ethos, policies and practices
I believe that most important indicators of professionalism that I possess are respect, accountability and tenacity. I show respect by listening, being fair, and following through. Instead of seeking to control children’s behavior, rather try to respect and understand it. What does Professionalism mean to me? Professionalism in my term means it is someone who is very dedicated to their profession. It is an important and great decision to follow by the rules and ethics of professionalism. If we did not have anyone that cared about their profession it would cause a lot of problems in our society today. It could cause a lot of disruption in your workplace. In order to abide by professionalism you must take pride in your job, percieve realistic goals and values, and know what your expectations are.
A professional is characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession (2) : exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace. Being professional should be a subconscious effort in the fact that it should always be applied. When employees are professional it helps the system run more efficiently and safely. A person must me a certain criteria when being evaluated on professionalism, a person is judged based on the clients; Attitude, Values, Communication techniques, and approachability. This is the core values which governs a setting. The ethos should be the way which the setting wants to operate. This could mean in accordance with a childcare theorist (e.g. Montessori); it could also mean a focus on creative arts or in another area.
Polk county public schools consist of 63 languages spoken, representing 151 countries. Nearly 11,000 students speak Spanish, 720 speak Haitian Creole and 100 speak Arabic language. In this school district 39 percent of students’ ages 0-17 live below the poverty line(“Diversity Management”, 2012). Unfortunately 19.3 percent of all children in Florida also live below the poverty line. 67 percent of the students enrolled in Polk County Public schools met federal guideline to quality for free or reduce lunch. 79 out of 158 schools in Polk County are classified as Title 1 schools. Polk County Population breakdown by racial makeup: White 66.3 percent, Black 15 percent, Hispanic 17.7 percent, Asian 1 percent, Native American less than 1 percent, Pacific Islander less than 1 percent. The district includes 158 principals and about 240 assistant principals (“Diversity Management”, 2012).
The Forrest County School District (FCSD) is dedicated to meeting the wide-ranging academic needs of all students and presenting opportunities for individuals to develop specialized talents and interests.
The Washoe County School District recognizes the importance of sustainability and how sustainability will allow for our stakeholders to have a successful future. As a district we believe in implementing sustainable values in each person that we come into contact with by leading lives that are reflective of creating a sustainable future. The WCSD defines sustainability as: creating an environment that promotes learning, civic engagement, and collaboration in ways that create mindful citizens that are aware of how the choices we make today impact our current conditions and have ripple effects that carry into our future.
There are approximately 300 children enrolled in California Elementary School under the age of eight. These 300 would have to find some alternative to school on Fridays if the Moniteau County R-1 School District’s schedule changed from a five day week to a four day week. Additionally student involvement and safety would suffer. Changing the Moniteau County R-1 School district’s schedule to a four-day week would be detrimental to students’ safety and involvement in activities.
Eastampton Community School is a kindergarten through eighth grade one building district that serves just over 600 students. ECS has a special education population of about 20 percent and approximately 25 percent of the students are on the free or reduced lunch and breakfast program. In such a small school, Mr. Duckett has to oversee all aspects of the curriculum across all grade levels. This was one of Mr. Duckett’s most challenging aspects of his job. He claims that honesty is not just telling the truth to people, but also being honest about yourself. When he held the position as curriculum coordinator, he would acknowledge that he was not the master of all content areas, but the teachers were. His role was to oversee the process and ensure that the curriculum was in line with the state standards.
Professionalism in education examines learning and ethical practice along with leadership and collaboration among teachers, staff, students, administrators and community members in a school. At my school, a charter in the center of Harlem, New York, I examined the lack of professionalism within the school and the detrimental effects this has on the teachers and scholars. Every school should strive to create a learning community in which teachers are growing with effective feedback, mentors, student input, collaboration with and professional development. It is the right of every teacher and the cornerstone of creating effective teachers that aid in producing students who are fulfilled and challenged in their academic careers.
Professionalism in the workplace, is the absolute key to having a successful, and smoothly run business. Professionalism is something that must be maintained by every individual within the work setting, especially in health care, whether it is the janitor, activity director, nursing assistant, doctor, or even the head administrator. Professionalism encompasses many aspects, such as teamwork, attitude, environment, knowledge, morals, and ethics.
Professionalism pivots on consistency, punctuality, preparation, and cooperation. I am dedicated to demonstrating professionalism in all my collaborations. My students count on my behavior and my classroom management methods to be consistent and fair. My professional conduct provides a safe and reliable environment for students, which encourages positive relationships and learning. A teacher with flexibility is able to adapt their methods to best serve students with different learning styles. Flexibility also means recognizing
