This paper is a Conceptual-Theoretical Structure (CTE) Evaluation. This paper will focus on the evaluation of the conceptual-theoretical-empirical linkages, evaluation of the selected theory, evaluation of the empirical indicators, evaluation of research findings, evaluation of the utility and soundness of the practice theory. Selected Theory Applied to Nursing Practice Using Actual Example Kristen M. Swanson’s Caring Theory is the solution in bridging the gap between nursing practice and theory. It offers an explanation of the links between patient well-being and the caring process (Tonges & Ray, 2011). Swanson explained that nurses should be able to demonstrate that they care about their patients, and that caring about their wellbeing is as important as their patients’ current medical problem (Tonges & Ray, 2011). A loss of a loved one, especially a child, is a painful event, and devastating to any parent, therefore, it is important to have a strong support system to obtain strength, peace, and comfort. Grief is a process that could not be hurried, and must be permitted to happen ("Grief of Parents," 2005). Grief could be experienced not just through a loss of a loved one, but also in a diagnosis of debilitating disease, or even the loss of a limb. During these difficult times, Swanson’s Caring Theory could be applied. Evaluation of CTE Linkages Swanson’s middle-range theory, Caring Theory, was derived from Watson’s grand theory of Human Caring (Chen & Chou, 2010). Jean
Nursing is as much science as it is a study in the human condition. Combining caring and the notion of human flourishing allows the nurse sharpen her understanding of patients’ needs by observing and understanding herself (Husted & Husted, 2008). A nurse is able to better anticipate the needs of her patients by noting similarities and differences between the two of them. With caring in the nursing corner, even under less-than-ideal conditions, one can still create havens of hope, nourishment, and the possibility for flourishing (MacCulloh, 2011).
The framework used is made explicit and has been adapted by a previous theorist. The framework is detailed to clarify caring within a literature context (Enns, 2007). It conceptualizes that caring has both humanistic traits and physical behaviours from the perspectives of both the nurses and the patients (Enns, 2007). The research question is clearly stated as “(w)hat are the expressions of caring
Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring. The theory can be described as an expanded view of
Nursing theory is vital to the nursing profession because it provides a foundation and framework which is reflected in nurses’ caring ideals and practice (William, 2015). Theory provides an understanding of a nurse’s role within the healthcare system. The first nursing theory, formed by Nightingale, was observations of interventions that improved patient outcomes (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2016). Nurses can improve quality of care by implementing theory into their practice (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2016). This paper will discuss the importance of nursing theory, Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not, and the application of this theory in the nurse
This model considers nursing as a self-care model based on the patient's perception of the world, as well as his or her adaptation to stressors (Erickson & Swain, 1982). This practice focus in nursing and its principles characterized by the treatment of the person as a whole, which taking in account mental, and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease. Therefore, exemplifies theory-based nursing practice that focuses on the patient's
Swanson's (1993) Theory of Caring is structured around five principles that encompass the overall definition of caring in nursing practice. This theory states that caring revolves around five categories: knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintaining belief. When applied to nursing practice, each of these five categories can fuel the caregiver's attitude and improve overall patient well-being. In nursing, as well as other areas caring can be defined as, "a nurturing way of relating to a valued other toward whom one feels a personal sense of commitment and responsibility'. Upon examination, the five processes of Swanson's Theory of Caring can be used in nursing practice to achieve an enhanced
Caring is an important part of nursing and must be taken very seriously in order for this theory to work. The patient needs to understand that the nurse is there to help in a time of need, but also is there on a caring level. Intriguing and Meaningful This particular theory intrigues me because it gives nursing a sense of compassion and caring.
Working in the medical field for over ten years has made me realize that there isn’t any other profession I would rather do, than be a nurse. Being a great nurse truly makes an impeccable difference in the way that a person heals. According to Jean Watson, nursing theorist, a caring approach is spread from generation to generation by the philosophy of the nursing profession as a unique way of managing
Professional nursing is grounded in science, education, practice and theory. Nursing theory clearly defines nursing and outlines measurable concepts and ground rules of which practice is built upon. It also facilitates in the enhancement of nursing knowledge. Nursing is flourishing the health facilities, promotion, and development of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, through diagnosis and treatment of a person’s psychological and physiological behavior, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations (American Nurses Association (ANA). Nursing theory provides the framework which guide nurses to deliver individual nursing care which improves wellness for the patient. An official illustration of nursing theory justifies, for nurses, their function and how it’s valued in the world of healthcare. Nursing theory encompasses the needs, interactions, outcomes, and humanistic perspectives of an individual and includes four levels of theory. This paper aims to focus on the work of Ida Jean Orlando, a middle-range nursing theorist, and her theory of the deliberative nursing process and will bring forth an examination of the importance of nursing theory and how it can be applied to professional nursing practice.
Nursing theories are views and beliefs developed by nurses. Nursing care uses these models in everyday practice. Over the years many nurses have created a solid base of information for nurses to practice by. These women influenced nursing still to this day. All have set the basis for our understanding and comprehension of nursing care. “The nursing theory process consists of six elements; Assessment, Nursing Diagnose, Outcome, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation” (George, p.226). Every patient goes through steps of nursing processes, no matter which model is used. Nurses ensure the highest quality of care when the steps are followed.
The use of nursing theories has practical use and benefits in the clinical nursing practice. One of the pillars of professional clinical nursing practice is patient safety and nurses are required to exercise the initiatives of improving patient care and treatment outcomes. Nursing theories are built from the dynamic process of using nursing science and are reproduced through research and its development by analysis and development of nursing principles (Bousso, Poles and Cruz, 2013). The nursing practice should be systematic and must evolve within the framework of professionalism. Nurse managers and clinical nurse practitioners should be guided with basic nursing theories and principles that will help them obtain better insight on what are the best nursing practices to execute that will yield the best patient outcome. Nursing theories introduce sets of concepts and principles that are often derived from nursing models or other disciplines. This provides nurses a systematic view of events that helps them to design the most appropriate approach to undertake in the delivery of nursing care and in the professional practice of the nursing profession.
The review of literature adequately supports the need for the study. The review of literature starts with the history from 1860’s in the Florence Nightingale era and continues to build upon the history until modern day time (Andersson, Willman, Sjöström-Strand, & Borglin, 2015). Furthermore, the review of literature builds the concept of caring and how previous research has been done do develop this concept related to caring. The researchers also discussed the evolution in nursing care related to the advances in medicine, technology, and time and financial constraints associated with providing quality nursing care. The review of literature built the problem statement by discussing the issues related to modern day nursing that has lead to basic care not being done (Andersson, Willman, Sjöström-Strand, & Borglin, 2015). The review of literature built the foundation for both the purpose of the study and research questions, additionally, both were explicitly state by the researcher in the body of the background. By the researcher building a solid foundation for the problem statement, purpose of the study, and the research question, it supported the need for the research being conducted to evaluate the nurses’ concept of caring and supports the validity of the study.
A conceptual framework is basically a foundation serving as a guide to standard setters to help them establish the principles and concepts. Therefore, the conceptual framework project is to develop an improved common conceptual framework that provides a foundation for developing future accounting standards. In this sense, the framework is
The chapter consists of requirements, criteria, factors, elements, and principles that gives insight on how to solve the Final Design project. The conceptual framework is a tentative theory (answer) for the research and design questions and represents the knowledge gained on how to solve a practical problem in the specific situation.
This section discusses the theoretical framework used in the study. It covers the problem statement, purpose statement and the research questions. The philosophical foundation of this study is also presented.
