Key Terms The line of best fit is the line that comes closest to all the points on a scatter plot. It can be used to make predictions. When data shows a correlation, you can estimate and draw a line of best fit that approximates a trend for a set of data. This line of best fit can be used it to make predictions. Example 1 Finding a Line of Best Fit Use the following steps to estimate the equation of a line of best fit. 1) Calculate the mean of the x -coordinates x m and the mean of the y -coordinates y m . 2) Draw a line that passes through ( x m , y m ) and appears to best fit the data. 3) Estimate the coordinates of another point on that line. 4) Find the equation of the line that passes through those two points.
