Case Study Analysis In the relationship of Kathy and Tony there is a lot of violence, they also had a lot of violence’s in their previous relationships. Kathy has three children from her ex-husband who was physically and verbally abusive to her, Kathy also struggles with a drug problem (Leroy, 2014). Tony had two marriages before his marriage with Kathy that neither worked out. His first wife left with the kids because she wouldn’t stand for the abuse, his second wife left Tony said there was no reason for it. Kathy and Tony had a baby and while at the hospital the social worker there was worried, they would not be able to take care of the baby, so a case was filed for neglect and abuse. When the social worker showed up to investigate the case neither party acknowledged she was their because they had friends over, seemed like they had forgotten about this appointment, and they seemed unprepared (Leroy, 2014). It will be talked about in this essay the theoretical theories, competencies and behavioral practices, challenges found in this case, strategies the social worker used, and critical skills and practices and behaviors used for managing during the case. The social worker told them why she was there and the reason for the visit but Tony did not engage with the social worker and Kathy just sat their quietly. The social worker gave them their contact information and told them if there was anything they needed to call them. A few days after this appointment Tony called the social worker while distraught and told her that Kathy used alcohol and Valium to try and end her life (Leroy, 2014). Tony asked for a meeting with the social worker. Tony says that in order for him to wake Kathy up and keep her awake he had to beat her. At this point both Kathy and Tony agreed they needed help because they did not want another failed relationship. The theoretical perspective that is reflected in this case is the strength-based perspective. The focus of this perspective is that the clients focus more on their 2
internal strength. With this perspective clients can help themselves and just need a coach to help them. Another perspective that goes with this case would be the empowerment theory, this theory proposes that if a client changes their behavior and their beliefs, they can go down a positive path in life (Turner & Maschi, 2015). In this case Tony and Kathy are wanting to change and strength themselves and their bond and they do not want to be abusive. When working with families they are all different and because of that different types of competencies must be used. One of the most important is patience’s when the social worker first shows up to their place Tony wanted nothing to do with them, the social worker understood and told them if she needs them to get ahold of her (Dale & Smith, 2013). Another competency used in this case would be empathy the social worker could see Kathy’s emotions when she was talking and noticed she was angry, the social worker used empathy to remain calm in the situation. In all cases there are always some challenges, these challenges are what make a social worker better at their job, and able to gain knowledge and skills needed. In the case of Kathy and Tony there were many different factors to the abuse. Kathy has a problem with abusing drugs, she also drank too which made her neglectful to her children. Tony also has a short temper because of this if he was messed with he would turn violent. Kathy and Tony both also were in abusive past relationships and because of that they could have trauma. The challenges that are in the case is whether or not to leave the children with the parents because Kathy has a drug and alcohol problem, and Tony is abusive towards her with his short temper. Another challenge is with how many different problems there are in this case it is going to take a lot of time to be able to meet their goals. 3
