Part 1 Review Young, Chapters 1 and 2, that specifically focused on the helping or therapeutic relationship. Reflect upon the reminders in the text regarding you as the helper in the counseling relationship. Part 2 Engage with the Professional Dispositions media and review Professional Dispositions Self-Evaluation Track 2 [DOCX]. Consider the ongoing assessment and demonstration of dispositions, which align with the counseling profession. Answer the following questions in your post: What do you remember that was challenging for you in your first skills course, Residency Track 1? Which professional dispositions do you intentionally want to demonstrate and through what actions while at residency? What actions have you taken since the first course to improve your skills, to align with the professional dispositions, and to increase your understanding of the counseling profession? Response Guidelines Read the reflections about becoming a helper and what your peers are thinking about becoming a counselor, as well as your peers' reflection of professional dispositions. Respond to one other learner's post. What about the peer comments do you like that you might borrow? What did you notice about your peers' posts that you didn't think about for your post? Were you surprised by any of their posts? Class, Overall, Track 1 Residency was an anxiety inducing experience. By the end of the week/sessions I was proud of myself for traveling solo (my self-awareness), developing skills I had never gotten a chance to use, and for being open to feedback from peers and the professor. One challenge I experienced during Residency was knowing when to allow for silence. During Track 2 Residency I am excited to take on group in hopes that groups will provide me with real life opportunities to be silent, work with a partner, and develop my non-verbal skills with another professional while increasing my self-awareness/ self-
management skills. Since Track 1 Residency I practice being silent in my current roles as a telephonic social worker I have quickly learned the importance of silence to allow the member/client the time to share their needs without interruption; because the engagement is over the phone with someone they are unfamiliar with providing a warm tone and silence allows the individual to be more comfortable in sharing their needs, individual circumstances, etc.
