The Limits and Potential of Nonprofit Organizations in Participatory Planning Diana Diaz LSUS

1 Introduction This study critically evaluates the article named “the limits and potential of nonprofit organizations in participatory planning”. This study will also summarize the theory utilized in the article. In this context, this study focuses on the research findings associated with the New Work HIV Planning to understand the benefits and challenges of the urban community planning process. The study then provides strategies for nonprofit and social service organizations to improve their practices. Synopsis of article By using the case of the New York HIV Planning Council, this article explored the benefits and challenges of an urban community planning process, which is often influenced by service providers from nonprofit social service organizations. The article analyzed the connection between the AIDS social movement and the HIV nonprofit service system in the context of the new social movement theory. In this way, the article explored why nonprofit social service providers were often successful in promoting the well-being of the general public and supporting their own organizational interests ( Chin, 2009). The author employed the case study approach in the article, with a primary focus on the New York HIV Planning Council. By doing so, the author examined the factors that contribute to the prevalence of nonprofit providers in the planning process and the barriers that hinder them from pursuing their own organizational requirements. Relevant theories The article applied the theory of new social movements to examine the relationship between the AIDS social movement and the HIV nonprofit service system. According to this theory, social movements are not predominately influenced by political or economic interests. However, this is influenced by societal aspects, including culture, identity, and quality of life.

2 The new social movement characteristics of the AIDS movement play a crucial role in fostering the involvement of nonprofit service providers during the community planning process. In the article, the author applied the new social movement theory to explain how nonprofit providers can promote greater public welfare and meet their organizational needs within the HIV service system ( Brown et al., 2021) . Application to practice The findings of the article are beneficial for those who are engaging with nonprofit organizations within the social and health service sectors. Practitioners can understand HIV planning and other community planning processes in the context of new social movements, which allows them to develop effective tactics to fight against powerful nonprofit providers. Hence, it is possible to enhance the level of customer representation and address community needs. In the nonprofit segment, the administrations can also apply the new social movement theory to build collaboration among nonprofit providers and other stakeholders to make more informed decisions in the best interest of the community ( Chin, 2018) . Conclusion This study concluded that the article provides a comprehensive insight into the role of nonprofit institutions in promoting the greater welfare of the general public through the community-based planning process. By applying the new social movement theory, the article emphasized the dynamics between social movements and nonprofit organizations in the best interest of the local community. This study provided practical implications for practitioners and other stakeholders involved in the nonprofit health and social service sector in order to make inclusion decisions for the interests and needs of the broader community.
