REL 100 Religion and Me Essay Religion has always been a constant presence in my life, as I was born and raised into a Christian family and have been attending church services every Sunday ever since I was in my mother’s womb. My family and I have been a member of the same non-denominational church, the Church of Christ, for my entire life. My Christian upbringing has shaped my worldview and has played a significant role in my personal and spiritual development. As a Christian, I believe in the importance of following the teachings of Jesus and living a life that reflects his example. Growing up in a Christian household exposed me to the teachings of Christianity and the importance of having God in our lives. As I've matured and learned more about Christianity, I've become more of a religious person. When I was younger, going to church was just part of the routine; I didn't fully appreciate the significance of the sermons or other aspects of Christianity. I knew that going to church was important, but I didn't fully understand some concepts such as Jesus' sacrifice or the meaning of Holy Communion. When I began paying more attention to the sermons at church, I started to understand Christianity better and realized the importance of God in our hearts and lives. While attending church services and listening to sermons provided a foundation for my understanding of Christianity, I realized that this was not enough to gain a deeper knowledge of my faith. I turned to TikTok and other resources to learn more about Christianity. This led me to recognize the importance of reading and studying the Bible to strengthen my faith. Also, I started to ask myself many questions about religion. For example, why are there so many different religions when there is supposedly only one God? I questioned why people follow other religions when Christianity is, in my view, the true religion. As I learned more about my religion, my curiosity grew, leading me to ask more questions about religion in general.  Over time, I have grown more faithful and dedicated to my religion. In 2020, I took a significant step in my spiritual path by getting baptized. I took this decision because I felt ready to commit to my faith more deeply and strengthen my relationship with God. Initially right before and after I got baptized, I was very committed to my Christian faith and my relationship with God. However later on, as life got busy with schoolwork, I found it harder to maintain that commitment. I sometimes forget to pray or read the Bible or fail to live according to Jesus’s teachings. Later on, I realized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with God no matter what. Although I still struggle with these things, I continue to try because I understand the significance of a relationship with God above all else. Even though I was learning more about Christianity at church, I still had a lot of questions about religion. I wanted to understand other types of religion and learn what makes a religion academically Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to study religion in an
academic setting in high school, as it was not part of the required curriculum. In college, I was excited to find that I had more elective options, including this course REL 100. This course caught my attention because it would give me the chance to study religion academically, considering the various themes and elements that make a religion. While I'm excited about this class, I also recognize that it may present some challenges. As someone who has not previously studied religion in an academic setting, I may need to adapt to the challenges and different ways of learning in a college-level religion class. Furthermore, I'm mindful of my own biases and perspectives, shaped by my religious background, and I'm committed to approaching this course with an open mind and a willingness to learn from diverse religions.
