1 Putting the Seven Dimensions of ABA into Practice Desiree M. Reese Capella University PSY7708 Shelley Hyde 4/25/2021
2 Putting the Seven Dimensions of ABA into Practice In 1968 the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis published their first issue and included, arguably, the most important article for the basis of ABA. This article was written by Baer, Wolf, and Risley and was titled Some Current Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis. They named these dimensions generality, effective, technological, analytic, conceptually systematic, applied, and behavioral. The dimensions these three men described have laid the foundation for behavior- analytic treatment plans and research. The following is a comparison of an article that exemplifies these dimensions and a behavior analytic attitude while the other does not. Example article The most fundamental of the seven dimensions is applied. Each behavior that is chosen to be replaced or increased needs to have social significance or be significant to the participant (Baer et al., 1968). Krentz et al. (2016) researched how using a token system could increase walking in individuals with intellectual disabilities. The researchers chose to focus on walking, which holds significant importance to the individuals participating due to walking can increase healthy living and decrease health concerns. The next most significant dimension to look at is behavioral, which means that the behavior chosen is observable and measurable (Baer et al., 1968). To maintain a behavioristic approach, a researcher must choose a visible and quantifiable behavior and, most importantly, describe the behavior in objective terms. When Krentz et al. (2016) chose walking, they saw how many days each participant walked and how many laps each participant completed during baseline and the intervention. During the intervention, the researchers gave each participant a token at the end of each completed lap. Then the tokens were counted at the end of the hour trial
3 to determine how many laps each participant completed. Each lap was measured by two cones set 50 meters apart, and each lap was the same distance for each participant (Krentz et al., 2016). Thus, the participants walking was observable as well as measurable. The analytic dimension states that the data present must be able to show a causal relationship between the intervention and the behavior (Baer et al., 1968). In this example, the researcher’s data detailed the number of laps each participant walked during baseline with no reinforcement versus the number of laps they walked during intervention when they received positive reinforcement that included verbal praise along with tokens (Krentz et al., 2016). The researcher’s data shows that the number of laps walked during baseline with no reinforcement was below the number of laps each participant completed with reinforcement. Therefore, because a causal relationship between the number of laps walked and the number of tokens given was shown, the analytic dimension was present. According to Baer et al. (1968), a reasonable amount of change needs to occur in a timely manner to meet the effective dimension criteria. Krentz et al. (2016) can show that their intervention was effective because each time a participant was given a token, their walking increased. At the end of the research, each participant was given a questionnaire to answer, and they said they were walking more now than before and felt more physically active. According to the data, the participant’s behavior of walking increased and did so in a reasonable amount of time. The technological dimension refers to the research or goal being so detailed that the study can be replicated or that a new tech can implement the goal (Baer et al., 1968). Krentz et al. (1968) described in detail the distance each lap was, the number of laps each participant
