1 Project One Christa Evans Southern New Hampshire University PSY 222: Research Methods in Psychology Liza Molina April 21, 2024
2 Project One Topic: The effect of resilience-promoting interventions on children’s mental health 1. Determine the plan’s background introduction . Include the following details: The title of the plan Summary of three relevant empirical and scholarly research studies for the plan. Each summary should be about 150 to 250 words. The title of this research plan is: The Effect of Resilience-Promoting Interventions on Children's Mental Health Shoshani, A., & Kor, A. (2022). The mental health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and adolescents: Risk and protective factors. Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy, 14 (8), 1365–1373. https://doi.org/10.1037/tra0001188 The objective of this study was to assess the effects of COVID-19 restrictions had impacted the children's mental health after two months of being in isolation. The effects were assessed by analyzing the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and adolescents' mental health and overall well-being. The pandemic was impactful on the entire society as a whole, especially children, who are in their most influential developmental stages. The method that was utilized for this study was questionnaires that were split into two different time periods. The first time period was before the outbreak of COVID-19. The second time period was eight weeks after the lockdown and schools had begun to reopen. There were various results of the study with signs of depression, anxiety, and panic symptoms. There was a report of increased technology use within the lockdown. There was a report of decreased life satisfaction, peer support, and positive emotions. Participants that obtained a higher baseline for their mental health symptoms exhibited greater symptoms after the lockdown had occurred. Social support and the consistency of a daily routine assisted in being a preventive against the children developing symptoms. Pluess, M., Boniwell, I., Hefferon, K., & Tunariu, A. (2017). Preliminary evaluation of a school-based resilience-promoting intervention in a high-risk population: Application of an exploratory two-cohort treatment/control design. PloS one , 12 (5), e0177191. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0177191 The purpose of this research study is to implement an intervention program in schools due to the mental health issues that have been so prevalent in children and adolescents. The efficiency of SPARK Resilience program was analyzed within
3 this program. SPARK is a universal school-based resilience promoting program. This program tested the effects of depression symptoms and resilience in high- risk populations in England. The study utilized a mixed method design by dividing the groups by the control group and the treatment group. The control group was given a single assessment. The treatment group was assessed four times before and instantly after and six and twelve months after the treatment. The participants of the study were made up of 438 girls between the ages of 11 to 13 years old. The data collected showed that the depression symptoms were alleviated right after and at six months but was not efficient after twelve months. With this intervention program, teachers were able to obtain a new way to connect and work with the children. By creating a space for open communication between the teachers and students, it gave the students the ability to feel equip to handle the situations that occur within everyday life. Khanlou, N., & Wray, R. (2014). A Whole Community Approach toward Child and Youth Resilience Promotion: A Review of Resilience Literature. International journal of mental health and addiction , 12 (1), 64–79. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11469-013- 9470-1 This article is based on what the community can do to make improvements to resilience levels in high-risk populations. This source used a review of children and youth resilience, which also highlighted the definition of resilience and the relationship of resilience with mental health and social outcomes. There was evidence of promoting resilience-intervention and the connection it has to decreasing health issues. The first review has utilized peer-reviewed information since 2000. The second reviewed government findings and research. The third review used evidence from three different perspectives. These perspectives were whether or not interventions can improve resilience in children and youth, whether or not the outcomes of interventions improve health and social effects, and whether or not there is substantial evidence that resilience can affect other populations. The review concluded by determining that development programs increased the ability of youth to cope with situations in everyday life. The intervention measures were instilled to teach youth how to deal with problems in an effective way. 2. Develop a clear and specific research question that is relevant to the three research studies you chose. Your response should be about 25 words. How have resilience intervention programs affected the children's mental health after the lockdown?
