Explain how you differentiate among the following disorders despite all of them having psychosis as a symptom. o Schizophrenia o Bipolar with psychotic features o Major depressive disorder with psychotic features o Schizoaffective disorder Psychosis can show in a variety of disorders, each with its own set of symptoms and diagnostic criteria that help separate them. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder marked by hallucinations, delusions, cognitive instability, and negative symptoms such as reduced emotional expression (APA, 2022). It commonly encompasses disruptions in cognition, perception, affect, and conduct. The diagnosis is established by observing the manifestation of distinct symptoms over a designated duration, typically spanning six months, while simultaneously eliminating other etiologies. Conversely, bipolar disorder encompasses occurrences of mania and depression, with the possibility of psychosis leading up to manic or depressed periods (Vovou, et al., 2021). Furthermore, patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder with psychotic features exhibit a combination of depressed symptoms and psychotic symptoms, including hallucinations and delusions. Psychotic symptoms manifest during spells of depression (APA, 2022). Finally, Schizoaffective disorder is distinguished by the simultaneous presence of symptoms derived from schizophrenia and a mood condition, such as depression or bipolar disorder. In order to obtain an accurate diagnosis, it is essential to understand the unique patterns of symptoms and their duration. Explain how misdiagnosis of these disorders can affect clients. Misdiagnosis of diseases including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder with psychotic symptoms can have devastating consequences for clients. When clients are misdiagnosed, they may receive ineffective treatment that fails to address their individual symptoms, resulting in extended suffering and potentially worsening of their illness. Furthermore, misdiagnosis can lead to delays in receiving appropriate treatment, creating discomfort and affecting the client's overall well-being and quality of life. As a result, correct diagnosis is critical for ensuring that clients receive the necessary care and assistance to effectively manage their disease. Explain how culture influences understanding of the diagnosis of the disorder. Culture influences how people view and comprehend the diagnosis of mental health issues. Different cultures have different ideas, values, and customs, which influence
how mental health symptoms are perceived and communicated (Bower, 2015). For example, in some cultures, symptoms of schizophrenia may be seen as spiritual experiences rather than evidence of a mental condition. Cultural variables can also influence help-seeking habits, views about medication, and the stigma attached to mental illness. References American Psychiatric Association.
