INTRODUCTION According to IDEA, an Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD) is a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2017) : An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors. An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers. Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances. A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression. A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems. Students with EBD struggle to maintain appropriate behaviors within the classroom, which affects their ability to access the curriculum. These behaviors are measured by the intensity, duration, and frequency, which also drives the support provided in a general education setting. 2
BACKGROUND This case study will focus on the journey of a student who struggles coping with the effects of having an emotional disturbance. Description of the student is as follows: He is reading on grade level and can answer questions related to the text. The student struggles to maintain attention and performs well when breaks are given. He often prefers to work for a tangible and may need prompting to do so. His parents are divorced, and he lives with his mother and older brother. His father lives in Ohio with his wife and children. 3
STUDENT’S DEMOGRAPHIC The student is a white male and is 8 years of age. He is in the 2 nd grade at Black’s Mill Elementary School in Dawsonville, Ga. English is the student’s family’s primary language. The student has moved a number of times, but currently resides in Dawsonville, Ga. Before moving to Dawsonville, the student lived in Atlanta. 4
DESCRIPTION OF SCHOOL & NEIGHBORHOOD He is a student at Black’s Mill Elementary (BMES) in Dawsonville, Ga. The area is rural with predominately middle class families (Wikipedia contributors, 2024b). Black’s Mill is a Title 1 school ( Home , 2024). 511 students enrolled 63% white, 15% Hispanic, 11% Asian, 6% African American, 5% two or more races 17% students with disabilities (“Student and Parent Sign In,” 2024) 5 Black's Mill Elementary School - photo by Erica Jones
