Blind Spot Mary Cardenas South University April 29, 2024
Week 1 Project 2 Introduction The blind spot is the area in the retina where the retinal ganglion cells exit the eye and form the optic nerve. This indicates that there are no cones or rods present in the area to process information and deliver it to the brain. The hole that exists has no sensitive light receptors and so any light that reaches this area is unable to be viewed/detected. Although some of us feel that we may not be able to notice it, we all have a blind spot in each eye. Luckily, one eye is usually able to make up for the other’s blind spot, meaning that if light reaches the blind spot of one eye, it does not reach the blind spot of the other. The brain is designed to recognize what exists, in terms of present information and no absence. Methods A small blue dot will appear on the left side of the screen as the goal is to identify the blind spot located in your right eye. To properly test the experiment, your left eye should be covered completely, fixating your right eye on the green dot, and pressing the “m” key for “yes” if you can see the white dot that is moving across the screen or press the “n” key for “no” if you cannot see the white dot. It is important you center your head so that your right eye has a clear view of the green dot and ensure that you are not tilting or turning your head to see the white dot. It simply must appear in your peripheral vision, or not. Results The results appear to be in accordance with my expectations as the prediction was that if most of the numbers are close to the value one, meaning that the white spot was able to be seen using only my right eye as it was fixated on the green dot. The data chart displays a value of zero, and this data indicates the times that I was unable to view the white dot using my right eye, also known as the blind spots. I was surprised by the simple fact that blind spots exist. Being that
