PSYC6104 – Discussion Post 1.2 1.2 - The Regulated Practice Wednesday, 26 July 2023, 2:53 PM Consider that this degree is the first step of achieving the necessary education in joining a regulated practice in your province or territory. As an example The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) explicitly outlines the controlled and regulated nature of this profession: Regulated Health Professions Act Controlled acts: (2) A “controlled act” is any one of the following done with respect to an individual: 14. Treating, by means of psychotherapy technique, delivered through a therapeutic relationship, an individual’s serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception, or memory that may seriously impair the individual’s judgment, insight, behaviour, communication, or social functioning. 1991, c. 18, s. 27 (2); 2007, c. 10, Sched. L, s. 32; 2007, c. 10, Sched. R, s. 19 (1). Controlled acts restricted 27 (1) No person shall perform a controlled act set out in subsection (2) in the course of providing health care services to an individual unless, (a) the person is a member authorized by a health profession Act to perform the controlled act; Your professional identity will develop as you grow in your understanding of the profession, practice, and meta-theoretical frameworks. What competencies and/or educational requirements will you need to register for professional practice in your province or territory? What are areas of needed growth in professional competencies as you consider this self-assessment? As you consider the areas you will need to grow professional competencies use Shebib Ch 1 (2022) and identify/discuss one area of growth you believe will be important for you to consider and respond to your colleagues concerning a different topic that they chose. You can post multiple posts as you will not answer all of the questions above in one post, choose your interest, not all of the questions above need to be addressed by you. 1.2: Discussion Post Professional survival is also one of the areas that I will need to grow in as well. There is also a lot of literature on burnout in this profession. Interestingly, Beaumont et al. (2016), conducted a study on the relationship between well-being, self-compassion, compassion fatigue, and burnout among student counsellors and student cognitive behavioural psychotherapists. The authors found that the students who measured highly on self-compassion and well-being, reported less burnout and compassion fatigue (Beaumont et al., 2016). This informs us that engaging and practicing self-compassion along our journey is vital for the long-term and can help with professional survival. In this regard, I believe this goes together with self-awareness of who we are as therapists so that we can also understand our own strengths and weaknesses (Shebib, 2022, p. 28). This includes being vigilant of personal thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to understand when professional survival may be at risk. Burnout can manifest in different ways: emotional, mental and/or physical, so having such self-awareness is vital in upholding professional survival (Shebib, 2022, p. 38).
