Clinical Field Experience C: Understanding Specialized Assessments - The Role of the Specialist Kennedy Ihrig SPD 531: Assessment and Eligibility in Special Education: Mild to Moderate Disability Grand Canyon University Dr. Aaron Deris April 24th, 2024
I decided to interview a school psychologist who deals a lot with attending the evaluations at our school. The school psychologist I interviewed selects assessments related to the domain area of concern and how the information will drive instruction, relating to meeting the standards. Some examples given were for standardized academic achievement and intellectual assessments, she follows the ethical guidelines for administration based on the test development requirements and administrator license qualifications. She prefers the iPad test kit for the assessments as it reduces error, increases student engagement, and efficiency of assessment time. Being a school psychologist they help children succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. They collaborate and consult with teachers, administrators, parents, and other professionals to find effective solutions to learning and behavior problems. They assess academic skills, aptitude for learning, and social-emotional-behavioral issues, and evaluate eligibility for special services. When discussing how to use the information to make eligibility, she looks at expected performance levels for the students grade level/peer comparison. Strategies for communicating the results, is using the parent parent reports rating scales to provide a summary of each of the subscales. Also, including visual graphs and intervention recommendations. The results are based on the evaluation report which drives the IEP development. Some strategies that can be used for advocating for accommodations, she emphasized making decisions based on the data-observed needs demonstrated by students during the assessment, instruction, intervention, and review of the work samples. When discussing the topic points, I learned a lot of valuable information that I will take into my future profession. Based on all that I learned, I feel more qualified and prepared to determine criteria, interpret the information, and understand how these results will go into effect for the student being evaluated.
