American Gov Chapter 6 1. Describe how political opinions are formed and mention at least three significant influences. Political opinions are formed and reconstructed many times in our life by moving factors around us. When we are young our families have arguably the biggest influence on our political opinion as they instill our moral beliefs and teach us how to view the world. The next influential factor is our school systems as they introduce us and teach us about our government. Which can easily be presented from a biased perspective. However, as we grow up, a majority of us begin to branch off and educate ourselves on our own beliefs and associate ourselves with organizations that feed into our beliefs. 2. How do race and ethnicity play a significant role in shaping political beliefs and public opinion? Support your response with specific examples. Much like the gender gap, different ethnicities face different challenges and different social norms growing up. For instance, an African American faces more racism and brutality from our police than someone who is white. Therefore, when asked if there needs to be reformation in our police system, they both have different experiences that shape the results of their answer. There is also still segregation alive today within communities in which a certain race is predominant in the area, and this factor affects how we see community issues. 3. How is gender related to political beliefs and opinions? It is related through the gender gap , which is the measurable difference in the way women and men vote for candidates and the way they view political issues. We face separate issues with gender and therefore our experiences shape us to have different beliefs. 4. Discuss three factors that might distort public opinion results collected through opinion polling. When I think of the distortion of results my mind immediately goes to stratified sampling, because it can be such a focused poll, and yet they claim it represents the national population regardless of how easily influenced this type of sampling is. Another distortion that my mind goes to is how typically, the way the questions are written are likely to be biased in themselves and can be presented to get a certain answer. Finally, much like stratified sampling, a majority of times they have a demographic as to where the polls are going instead of it being a
random sampling. If the poll is intended to represent a more particular demographic, this may be necessary, however, when attempting to gain insight from a more general population, it can be purposely skewed to obtain certain results.
