Module 5 Short Responses – Question 1 In the space below, specify which historical lens you'd like to use for this exercise. The Civil Rights Movement had significant impacts on the African American community.  I would be interested in looking further into how this movement affected the community and I would use a social lens for my research. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 2 Next, formulate a research question about the civil rights movement (historical time from 1954 – 1968), using the lens you've chosen. The modern Civil Rights Movement included voting rights and desegregation of public education.   My research question in this area would be, how was the education of African American children impacted by segregation of the education system and what improvements were seen with the desegregation of the public educational system? Module 5 Short Responses – Question 3 First, go back and review the research question you developed in Step 1. For Step 2, first name two different primary sources that you might use to answer that question. Be as specific as you can. Your primary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library. The primary sources I would seek out regarding the civil rights movement and public education would start with documents from the court case Brown v. Board of Education.  This source would provide valuable insight into the fight to desegregate the public school systems and provide the same educational opportunities to children of all races. In my search for primary sources, I wanted to find documentation from that era that would give me more of a personal account of how segregated schools and the fight to desegregate them impacted the community.  I came across an article from the Saturday Evening Post, Public Schools Died Here.  This article details how a county in Virginia chose to close the public schools and open only private schools that were open only to white children.  Since the court order imposed on them was to desegregate all public schools, this was their way to go against that ruling and keep their schools segregated.  The article further explains the impact on the African American children that were unable to go to school and get an education.   Goodman, I. (1961). Saturday Evening Post, 234(17), 32–89.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 4 Next, name two different secondary sources you could use to answer your research question. Again, be as specific as you can. Your secondary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library. My search focused on the impacts of segregation and integration of the public education system. I found a journal article, Integration and Segregation in Arkansas--One Year Afterward, which provided insight into the effects of these events on the African American community. Another article I found was, Desegregation since the Coleman Report: Racial Composition of Schools and Student Learning. This article is more recent (2016) and identifies how racial segregation is still seen in some aspects of the educational system and further explains this impacts the education of African American students. A. Stephen Stephan, & Charles A. Hicks. (1955). Integration and Segregation in Arkansas-- One Year Afterward. The Journal of Negro Education, 24(3), 172 - 187. https://doi- org.ezproxy.snhu.edu/10.2307/2293450 Rivkin, S. (2016). Desegregation since the Coleman Report: Racial Composition of Schools and Student Learning. Education Next, 16(2), 29 - 37. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 5 Construct a thesis statement that provides an answer to the research question you posed in Step 1. Base your response on the historical evidence that's been presented in this course so far, as well as any research you may have done on your own. In this paper, I will argue that the segregation and later integration of public schools had significant consequences on the education of the African American community that is still seen today. I will do this by examining the effects of segregation and comparing the education received by both black and white children. The significance of this argument is that this continues to be a concern and challenge today. Parents and educators of all races should be aware of how things used to be and how some of these challenges are still fought now. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 6 Name three specific historical events that can be considered contributory causes of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Briefly explain why you believe each of these events contributed to the passage of the Act.
