Melody Ormsby Athens' main democratic institutions were open to all male citizens. The assembly convened two or three times a month at the Pnyx Hill location, which could accommodate up to 6,000 residents. The majority vote would determine the ultimate decision, and any citizen might attend, discuss, and vote on any matter. Talks covered a wide range of topics, including legislation, political trials, food supply, money, and military affairs. "Any citizen who had become too strong and dangerous for the polis may likewise be voted out of Athens by the assembly. In this instance, participants used a secret ballot in which they scribbled their names on a shattered piece of pottery, or "Ostrakon." With Cartwright (2018). References: Cartwright, Mark. (2018).
