I have not had a conflict between my professional and personal identities arise in my field placement as of yet. I am interning at Christian Counseling Associates. I am mostly working Intake (answering phones and making referrals to counselors) and Quality Assurance (checking counselor files for all needed paperwork, payments, treatment plans, etc.). I have been cleared to begin seeing clients but have not been assigned to any yet. That being said, I am grateful to be working with an organization that aligns with my faith and world view. While biblical counseling presents challenges of its own, it may not present the same types of conflicts many other social workers encounter. However, I may, during the course of this internship, work with a client that has radically different political and societal views than myself. If the client espouses these views during individual sessions, I may begin to find it difficult to remain impartial and open-minded. In this situation, I would refer to the Ethical Principles from the NASW Code of Ethics (2023). The application of several principles are appropriate here. Out of respect for my client’s autonomy, I would uphold their right to self-determination by ensuring that all decisions are made in their best interest without regard to my personal beliefs (National Association of Social Workers, 2023). I would maintain professional competence by seeking the direction of my supervisor and any additional education or training that might be relevant (Council on Social Work Education, 2022). I would avoid any conflict of interest and maintain professional boundaries by recognizing the potential for conflict due to personal biases, while ensuring my actions prioritize my client’s well-being (National Association of Social Workers, 2023). The core social work values of Service, Dignity and Worth of a Person, Importance of Human Relationships, and Integrity are all critical elements in the ethical decision-making process in this hypothetical situation (National Association of Social Workers, 2023). I would also refer to the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Social Work Competencies (2022). By engaging my client in a respectful manner and valuing their perspective, I can put aside my own personal biases and conduct thorough assessments, interventions and evaluations that will serve my client and their best interests (Council on Social Work Education, 2022). Additionally, I would engage in self-care as a coping skill and manage stress with mindfulness and intentionality techniques. In these ways I can adhere to the ethical standards and principles of the social work profession. References Council on Social Work Education.
