For this discussion post, I will compare a cohort study to a randomized controlled trial regarding research quality. What is the fundamental difference between the method you have chosen (either the case- control or cohort method) and the randomized controlled trial? Randomized controlled studies (RCTs) are considered the gold standard in medical research to assess the benefits and harms of treatments (et al., 2022). The main fundamental difference between a cohort study and RCTs is that a cohort study follows a specific group of participants over a period to track an outcome, while RCTs track the effectiveness of a specific intervention on a particular group of people. In other words, Randomized trials are experimental and cohort studies are observational. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the study method you chose (case-control or cohort study)? The significant advantage of the cohort study design is the ability to study multiple outcomes associated with a single exposure or multiple exposures in a single study. Another considerable advantage of the cohort study design is the ability to analyze various products related to a single direction or multiple exposures in a single study (Andrade, 2022). The most significant disadvantage of performing cohort studies is that they are expensive to conduct and take a long to complete; in fact, the investigators who analyze the data may be the successors of those who started the study (Andrade, 2022). What are the characteristics of a correlational study? A coronational study it's a specific type of research that identifies relationships between two or more variables (Seeram, 2019). In this type of research, the researcher does not control any part of the variables; they can observe. Findings from correlational studies can be used to determine prevalence and relationships among variables and to forecast events from current data and knowledge. Where does the method you chose (case-control or cohort study) fall on the research pyramid? What does where it is on the research pyramid mean? The top of the pyramid represents the most substantial evidence. Systematic reviews are at the top of the pyramid, meaning they are the highest and least common levels of evidence. The pyramid's base includes unfiltered evidence, randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and case reports. So, cohort studies lag somewhere in the middle. As you go down the pyramid, the amount of evidence will increase as the quality of the evidence decreases. The higher up on the pyramid, the less evidence exists. Lower down the pyramid; more evidence exists but of lesser quality.
