Foundational Knowledge Worksheet
Module 3
ABA 617
Introduction
It is essential for scholars in Applied Behavior Analysis to both apply and demonstrate mastery of
foundational knowledge content. In the context of ABA 617: Personnel Supervision & Management in
ABA, you will be learning about using the principles of ABA to impact behavior at an organizational level.
It is essential that you be able to relate these concepts to the philosophical and practical underpinnings of
our science.
The worksheet that follows will require you to stretch your thinking and make connections between
concepts you may not have known could be related; your ability to do this will enhance your outcomes as a
graduate student and enrich your clinical practice.
Instructions
1)
You may work with a peer on this assignment.
2)
If you choose to work with a peer, you should work together via telephone, Skype, FaceTime, etc to
complete this assignment in an interactive way.
3)
After you have completed the assignment, you will upload the worksheet to Canvas.
NOTE: All short answer submissions to this assignment MUST be ORIGINAL submissions. Fill in the blank
answers may or may not match your partner’s. You may find that you agree or disagree on these answers-
you need not come to consensus. Foundational knowledge activities are discussed (with notes taken) in
pairs or small groups where assigned; however, submissions of all short answer foundational knowledge
assignments must be the students’ ORIGINAL WORK. In other words, though students start this assignment
together in small groups, the final product should not be completed together
and no two short answer
products should look the same. If the submission of your short answers are not original, you will be referred
to academic integrity and/or will receive a zero on this assignment, at the discretion of the instructor.
Identify the Behavior Analytic Concept
Please read the following scenario
Scenario
The highway patrol is looking to further reduce texting and driving incidents.
The higher ups declare a
zero- tolerance edict over the next two weeks when patrol personnel see a driver so much as holding a
phone in their hand or staring downward at what’s likely a phone although the latter may be difficult to
prove if a citation is given and appealed.
The edict requires the patrol personnel to pull over the offending
or possibly offending driver in every suspected instance and give citations versus letting someone off with a

warning. Patrol personnel who meet a certain quota of giving citations will be given an extra 10 hours of
vacation time for the next year. Patrol personnel who don’t meet the quota of giving citations will have to
attend a 5-hour retraining seminar.
The higher ups have also decreed that interactions with offending motorists should be professional but
neutral.
Statements of apologies and/or or argumentative statements should be ignored versus responded to
as they were in the past. When the ticket is given, the patrol personnel are to quickly leave the scene and go
back to patrolling without making eye contact. It’s believed eye contact has reliably preceded apologetic
and/or argumentative statements in the past.
It’s the belief of the higher ups that the loss of funds from paying citations or time lost appealing citations
will result in drivers keeping their phone out of reach when driving.
Following the two-week zero tolerance
policy, more signs will immediately be placed on the highway warning of patrol personnel specifically
looking for illegal phone behavior when driving while the quota for giving citations will be eliminated.
The
higher ups will do so in hopes the signs alone following the brief surge of citations, a much cheaper
intervention than increased court cases due to appeals, will result in drivers changing their behavior.
Provide an example within the scenario above that relates to following concepts (1 point each)
Positive Reinforcement
The patrol personnel who met a certain quota of giving citations will be given an extra 10 hours of vacation
time for next year.
Negative Reinforcement
The patrol personnel that do not meet the quota of giving citations will have to attend a 5 hour retraining
seminar so by giving a citation of the patrol can avoid the retraining seminar.
Extinction
Any apologies from a driver being ignored can be considered as extinction by withholding reinforcement
when it was previously reinforce.
Negative Punishment
Drivers spend money on citations in court would decrease phone use while driving.

A defense department assigned its highest priority to develop an advanced aircraft using materials not previously used and untested technologies. A firm fixed-price contract was awarded to a qualified vendor. Controls were in place at all levels, and progress reports—noting challenges—were sent to top officials. Top officials reported that progress was excellent, but the project failed due to enormous expenditures with no aircraft developed. Which risks were not adequately considered?
I. Because the requirements were not specific, the use of a firm fixed-price contract made the project risky.
II. The personnel at many levels sent false reports forward on cost incurred and progress made.
III. The contractor lacked adequate technical skills to deal with technology that was still evolving.
IV. Top procurement officials did not act on “red flags” due to a “can do” mentality on a high priority of the program.

Estimate the effort, time, production and the number of personnel necessary for the development of a Communications system that has a size of 30,000 LDC. In this project there are factors that influence the development and ensure the proper functioning of the system. These are: Complexity of development, staff qualification and advanced knowledge of the language in which it will be developed. Each factor in the order described has a weighted value of 1.15, 0.7 and 0.91 respectively.
It is important to mention that the monthly payment per person working in the development is $2,200.

SmartPAK (Smart Backpack)
Description:
The SmartPak, a cutting-edge smart backpack, is constructed using high-quality materials such as ballistic fabric, nylon fabric, polyester fabric, and polyurethane foam. These materials are carefully chosen to ensure durability and comfort for the users. Additionally, the SmartPak features water-resistant layers that protect its contents in case of rain or accidents.
The SmartPak is designed with several space-saving features and valuable functionality. It incorporates multiple pockets and a spacious main compartment, providing ample storage space for personal belongings. The size and dimensions of the SmartPak vary to accommodate different torso lengths and hip widths. It is available in three sizes: small (42 cm x 64 cm), medium (46 cm x 72 cm), and large (50 cm x 98 cm).
To enhance user comfort, the SmartPak is equipped with adjustable cushioned shoulder straps and a padded back panel. These features ensure a comfortable fit and reduce strain…

After creating a decision matrix for two types of materials used to design a safety belt, an engineer assigns a weight of 4 to nylon for thickness and a weight of 5 to polyester for thickness. The engineer also assigns a weight of 4 to nylon for strength and a weight of 3 to polyester for strength. Polyester is more expensive than nylon. Describe which material would be preferable to use for the safety belt, if cost is prioritized as a criterion
