In Activity 1, which way did the blue marble travel when the cup was removed? When I lifted the cup, the marble continued in the direction in which it was being spun which was counter-clockwise. So as I lifted the cup it continued to move toward the left from the top of the cup where I had marked it. I tried a few times to see if I could lift the marble with the cup using centrifugal force but wasn’t able to get the proper lift with it.
2. You spun a bobber with a mass of 14 washers in the cylinder, and one with a mass of 8 washers in the cylinder. How does the velocity of the 14-washer bobber compare with the velocity of the 8- washer bobber? Describe the relationship between the mass of the cylinder with the washers and the velocity of the bobber. As the mass of the bobber increases, the velocity should decrease and vice versa. This is assuming that no external torque is applied. Because of this, the 14-washer bobber should have a lower velocity than the 8-washer bobber. But in the experiment I noticed that as the weight of the bobber increased, so did the velocity. 3. What do you notice about the relationship between the centripetal force and the weight of the cylinder with washers? Explain the reason for this relationship. As the weight of the cylinder increases, so does the centripetal force. This is because as the weight increases, it pulls on the string and causes it to be shorter, which decreases the distance of the revolutions. 4. How will centripetal force be affected if you double the velocity at which you spin the bobber? If the velocity at which the bobber is spun is doubled, the centripetal force would also increase. 5. What would you expect to happen to the velocity of the bobber if the mass of the washers in the cylinder remained the same and the radius was doubled? If the radius was doubled, but the mass of the cylinder remained the same, I would expect the velocity of the bobber to decrease.
