LANGUAGE ACQUISITION EPORTFOLIO ECE315: LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT IN YOUNG CHILDREN INSTRUCTOR: CRISTY CLANCY KAJHAN HARRIS SEPTEMBER 12,2018
Hello All, my name is Kajhan Harris I’m from Los Angeles, CA. This is my 5 th year on and off taking online classes. I previously took classes at West Los Angeles college and classes at Cal State Northridge as a freshman. I will be seeking my BA degree in Cognitive studies and graduate in May 2019. My career currently is Administrative / clinical Care Partner at UCLA hospital completing my degree will give me the qualifications to step up within my company to a new position named Mental Health Practitioner. I believe this statement is so true because of the field I work in. I am in mental health and I see a lot of kids with different disabilities so I have adapted to working with children already with these disabilities and helping them learn or cope with things they currently have going on in their lives. This statement will help me over the next five weeks by sharpening my tools on some things I may not have knew. What I have learned so far about working with children with disabilities is that you have to be very patient and take your time with teaching them new things or trying to get them to understand rules. I am excited about working with children with disabilities because it gives me joy to help out people in need and give back to someone who genuinely would like my help. INTRODUCTION
Language Rich Environment “ In my classroom I have chosen to build it to fit the needs of children that range from ages of 5 years of age to 8 years of age. In my classroom on each side of the desk can fit four students and one student at the top of each we had a set up like this in my elementary class that helped a lot growing up. This way students can work together easily with someone straight across from them or pair up next to them it also gives room to fit my computers and also circle rugs and reading area. As the teacher I find it more effective to sit directly in front of the class and have whitebnoard behind me. Next to the teachers desk is another desk for my children that will have any behavioral issues in class or children that require special one on one learning that have an effective IEP plan in place. There is a special reading area where in free time I will let those who decide to read along sit at on the beanbag chair or on the plush sofa. Also would be an option to sit quietly at his or her own desk. The circle rug will be where everyone will come together if we do our own story time as a whole group. I also found it effective to have a story time chair where each student will get a chance to try and speak to the classroom and work on impersonal public speaking which will also help their vocabulary. On the left side of the classroom there are computers if we need to use them for different projects or reasons. If I have a child in my class with behavioral issues I will make a reward system for him or her if they do well they will be able to earn computer time. Also , In the back of the classroom their will be storage for games and puzzles if we use them during our freetime. We will keep all reading material in the back on the blue rug where the bean bag chair is so one could read in peace if need be. I also included a sink in the back corner of the classroom so students are not easily distracted to always walk to front and get water or wash their hands if they have too. In my eyes I have my classroom set up well will all the space I would need. My learning conditions will help bolster the physical space of the youngsters I am working with by upgrading their aptitudes. They will have a chance to draw and compose increasingly while they are at their work areas either amid leisure time for drawing or when we are chipping away at a task they can compose things or with math attract shapes to enable them to check. The manner in which the work areas are set up, it likewise allows the understudies to take a shot at their fine engine abilities by giving them an opportunity to collaborate with alternate understudies at their table. It likewise encourages them take a shot at their physical wellbeing and prosperity since there is a sink in there they have a chance to wash their hands when they discover the need to or when they are messy from crafts. Many of the things in my classroom will help students with an effective domain. Having all students close together will help build social interactions and relationships that can benefit from helping language also. In my classroom their will be many posters and pictures on the walls also so students can gaze around the room when boredom strikes. The posters will not be fun posters but posters that will teach the students something or like a world fact. “
“ Putting words on windows around the classroom also seems to be effective. If I was to teach a Spanish class having objects near the words on the windows will help the child learn Spanish language with constant repettion everyday. Even if they are looking out the window at a tree I could have árbol or grass could translate to césped. They will still be forced to learn when looking away because it will be in their face. Labeling everything in the classroom will be the most important thing I believe and having pictures of what the object is so that a child could connect an name to a object. This also helps provide support to children in the class with learning disabilities. (Dorrell, 2002) “
“ Having the desk set up the way I do will help a lot because it will support each child if they need a buddy or partner for help. I will help each student by pairing a more less advanced student with a more advanced student so they can lean on each other while doing assignments. Some research does show that a low ability child will benefit from just simply interacting with a child that is higher functioning (Gillies,2006). Smaller groups will help each child be able to problem solve together and come up with solutions. They will acquire better language skill by working together. Teaching will be somewhat easier and just be able to check in and make rounds making sure everyone is working appropriately. For grading on a group project what I find most effective is how the group does will with answers and have every individual student reflect on their report of what they just did. ”
“ Students also love to read this is one of the major ways I think will help them develop. According to the text it states that story telling will help a child develop a “Minds eye” (Piper,2012). Reading will do the same for the child and it will help them develop more language skills and will help better communication. It not only gives them the skill to be able to know what a word means and comprehend it but they will be able to express and relate to other people. (Early Moments, n.d.). “
