Quandary – Kilroy: Chapters 5, 9 and Ramsay, Kiltz: Chapter 6 After having read the assigned chapters and your own research briefly explain what CBRNE means. Which of these do you think is our biggest threat naturally? Which is or biggest threat from attack? Very briefly tell us about a time in history where any one of these involved great losses of life either on purpose or by accident/through nature. Can you think of any examples where WMD was used during biblical times? Nowadays, it gets harder and harder for the Department of Homeland Security to accomplish their mission to protect American from terrorism and cyber-attacks. Over the years, terrorist groups have tested new ways and means to acquire and use more dangerous weapons to maximize damage and incite terror, including weapons incorporating CBRNE materials. With advancements being made in technology and the expansion of legal and illegal commercial channels, some of these weapons have become increasingly accessible. Definition, CBRNE is an acronym for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and high yield Explosives. These types of weapons have the ability to create both mass casualties as well as mass disruption of society. Emergency responders are taught how to recognize and mitigate attacks from such weapons. It is important for the public to be aware of these types of weapons. By becoming educated on the various types of weapons and how best to respond in the event of an attack, their chances of surviving are significantly increased. For example, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic might have a negative impact on terrorist and extremist threats, contributing to a growth of breeding grounds for radicalization. According to Department of Economic and Social Affairs, it was approximately 14.9 million people died associating with COVID-19 pandemic. Until now, there are reported about 1.2 million deaths due to the COVID-19 in United States of America. Moreover, this pandemic also destroyed our economy in which a lot of people lost their jobs. Also, global has to face the worst recession about food shortages and supply shortages. Therefore, the CBRNE threats are a multitude of parties that need to operate in a coordinated fashion to provide security, preparedness, and training. Government agencies, such as police and military personnel, as well as healthcare providers need to act in concert with facilities managers and private organizations who manage sports venues. This coordination can be obscured if there is a lack of effective communication between involved agencies, thereby increasing vulnerability to CBRNE threats. Advanced training exercises that coordinate and facilitate interoperability between international, national, and local actors engaged in countermeasures to CBRNE attacks are critical. Weapons of mass destruction (WMD) include chemical, biological, and radiological agents with the potential to cause death at low doses and with serious long term health effects in survivors. WMD agents can be used to terrorize or subjugate populations and wreak economic damage. According to Bible, the Old Testament describes numerous occasions when God brought plagues and diseases on His people and His enemies. “For this time, I will send all my plagues on you yourself, and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth” – Exodus 9:14. The spread of coronavirus is a foretaste of pandemics that will be part of the end times. “There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven” – Luke 21:11. The
appearance of pandemic may or may not be tied to God’s specific judgment of sin. For those who do not know Jesus Christ as Savior, pandemic disease should be a reminder that life on this earth is tenuous and can be lost at any moment. As bad as pandemics are, hell will be worse. The Christian, however, has the assurance of salvation and the hope of eternity because of the blood of Christ shed on the cross for us. “So, Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him” – Hebrews 9:28. Threats to homeland security: Reassessing the all-hazards perspective . Wiley. Hello Devin, Thank you for your post about CBRNE threats. In my opinion, the CBRNE terrorism activities differ from a normal terrorist attack because CBRNE agents additionally cause contamination and specific health hazards. Also, the CBRNE incidents call for the decontamination, which entails immediate removal of the unabsorbed contaminant from the body of victim. Thus, the training through exercise needs to be conducted to hone skills and develop reflexes of the responders, so that they can promptly remove victims from the agent source and also remove agent from contaminated personnel. Therefore, I totally agree with you that it is important to train and educate the responders to identify the different kinds of CRBNE attack and rapid response to communities facing an outbreak. Management of mass casualty incidents due to covert attacks involving CBRNE agents or human-made accidents involving them, requires overall preparedness and risk reduction at all levels including development of an efficient response mechanism. This needs contingency planning, capacity development in terms of provision of basic infrastructure, trained human resources, equipment, and evolvement of coordination and implementation mechanism. According to Christian viewpoints, deadly weapons of mass destruction make it possible for all human life to be destroyed in the ends time. “And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short” – Matthew 24:22. Although treacherous times lie ahead, most human who repent of their sins and commit their lives to God can escape these terrible end- time events. “Watch therefore and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man” – Luke 21:36.
