American Imperialism from 1865 to 1910 gave light to a lot of new changes in the country. Prior to American imperialism, the United States gave birth to a lot of movements like Manifest Destiny. The idea of Manifest destiny then gave birth to laws like the Indian removal act, which forcefully moved millions of Native Americans out of their lands in the south and forcefully relocated them to Oklahoma. With Manifest Destiny also came the acquisition of new territory and new interventionist laws like the Monroe Doctrine, which blocked European countries from any further colonization in the Americas. The result of these movements and laws was an America set on expanding its dominance across the world, an imperialist dominance. As Manifest Destiny pushed US policymakers into taking over most of the land in the continental US, our policy began to shift. America’s growing influence from 1865-1910 was caused by the growing economic power of the US market. However, the most important cause of the US’s expanding role in the world can be attributed to the US’s desire for military power and cultural superiority. America’s growing influence from 1865-1910 was caused by the growing economic power of the US market. Document 5 shows the need for an open-door economic policy between China and the United States. This demonstrates that thanks to this open door policy, economic growth developed our national policy into that of an imperialist one. Although economic power was a factor in American Imperialist from 1865-1910, the most important factors were military power and cultural superiority. One of the most important factors in America’s growing influence from 1865-1910 was our increased military power. Document 3 states that to be a military power, we must have a strong navy. This demonstrates that through the expansion of the United States Naval Force, America was able to expand its dominance and push American imperialism around the globe. The historical context of this document is that the United States was involved in many conflicts such as the Spanish-American War or the annexation of Hawai’i to establish naval bases in the pacific like Pearl Harbor. This shows that by following ideologies like Alfred Mohan’s US expansion of the Navy led to American Victory in these conflicts and set up naval bases in places like Pearl Harbor, thus expanding American military power. Document 4 states that America’s victory in the Spanish-American War, there was a newfound control of territories like Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam. This shows that America’s acquisition of these territories led to expanded military power across much of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The purpose of this document is to show America feasting on these territories. On top of military power, another very important factor in America’s growing influence from 1865-1910 was cultural superiority. Document 2 outlines that White Christians are the dominant race and they and only they can run the world. This shows that our motives for expansion and our aspiration to be culturally superior to other races and demonstrate our superiority. The historical context of this is that after the Spanish-American War, many of the recently acquired territories such as Guam and the Philippines were forced to convert to Christianity and learn English, and anyone who didn’t comply with that would be punished. This shows that American Imperialism pushed the idea of cultural superiority across the world and affected many native populations of the territories we conquered. Document 6 portrays uncle
Sam giving the natives of the Philippines two options, either choose to convert and be educated, or be educated by force. This shows how American Imperialism pushed the idea of cultural superiority by forcing the native tribes to convert and adopt American customs and religion, or face certain doom.
