Adrenal Gland Histology Instructions: Refer to the “Histology Guide” resource (Table of Contents -> Histology Guide -> Search -> Endocrine Glands -> Adrenal Glands) 1. Please refer to the diagram shown below. Label Structures A-E. A. capsule B. zona glomerulosa C. zona fasciculata D. zona reticularis E. adrenal medulla 2. For each hormone in the left-hand column, fill in the below table. Hormone Family of Hormones Stimulus for Release (Humoral, Hormonal, Neural) Source: Zone/Region of Adrenal Gland Target Cells / Tissues Effect(s) Aldosterone Mineral corticoid Humoral and hormonal Zona glomerulosa Kidneys To conserve water and get rid of potassium Cortisol Glucocorticoid ACTH from pituitary gland Zona fasciculata Various cells throughout body Metabolism, immune response, phycological processes Androgens Androgens ACTH stimulation Zona reticularis Various tissues including adrenal glands The development of secondary sexual characteristics
influencing libido Epinephrine and Norepinephrine Catecholamines Neural, sympathetic nervous system stimulation Adrenal medulla Various tissues including heart and blood vessels E and NE are involved in the fight or flight response 3. The “Fight or Flight” response: a. Which branch of the autonomic nervous system stimulates release of catecholamines from the adrenal gland? Sympathetic i. What neurotransmitter is used by the neurons of this branch to stimulate the adrenal gland? ACH ii. Which region of the adrenal gland is stimulated? Medulla iii. How are epinephrine and norepinephrine able to act so quickly to elicit the “fight or flight” response? o Why is epinephrine used in the treatment of asthma attacks? Because it dilates the airway, bringing more air into the body. iv. Other names for E and NE are adrenaline and noradrenaline . 4. Identify the hypothalamic and pituitary hormones responsible for regulating adrenal gland secretions: a. The CRH hormone from the hypothalamus is transported via the hypophyseal portal system to stimulate the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland to secrete the hormone ACTH which is transported by the blood to bind to receptors located on the adrenal cortex stimulating the secretion of glucocorticoids, primarily cortisol .
