ABS 415 WK 2 DIS 2 Identify a specific career or profession and evaluate which elements of emotional intelligence (EI) you consider most essential to be an effective leader in that chosen career or profession. Include specific examples from realistic work/professional scenarios demonstrating how those EI elements are necessary for leaders in that setting. The profession I chose is behavioral health specialist. In order to effectively promote behavioral health, leaders need to have a strong grasp of how their feelings and behaviors impact those around them. A leader's performance is directly correlated with how well they interact and collaborate with others. Spend some time honing your social skills, motivation, self-control, empathy, and self-awareness. For instance, while I was a manager at a UPS warehouse, I observed some conflicts and animosity between two team members who shared a workstation. One believed that the other wasn't doing their fair share of the job throughout work. I made the decision to set up a private meeting to discuss the matter rather than create a distraction at work. I assisted the staff members in sharing their worries, figuring out shared objectives, and cooperating more successfully by actively listening to them and showing empathy. Based on the information in the text discussing how emotions influence performance, create at least one example of how negative emotions influence work performance. When working in a behavioral health context, negative emotions can have a big impact on productivity. An employee's likelihood to collaborate with colleagues may be reduced if they are experiencing anger or resentment, for instance. This could result in conflict and decreased productivity. According to Daft and Lane (2011), an employee who is under a lot of stress may find it difficult to focus on their work, which could result in mistakes and lower output. Employees' negative emotions, both active and passive (sadness, guilt), as well as their performance in and out of roles, are impacted by daily conflict occurrences at work. (2010) Nolen-Hoeksema, S., and Aldao, A. Take the role of a leader in the industry/profession of your choice. You’ve assigned your employees/supervisees to work on projects in groups. One of the members of your team comes to you and asks to be reassigned because one of the members in their assigned group is “so negative, always complaining, and constantly oversharing about all of the drama in their personal lives.” Using either your own results from the “Leader's Self-Insight 5.2” questionnaire or those of a fictitious leader, formulate two brief scripts demonstrating how your chosen
leader would respond to (1) the employee who requests reassignment and (2) the employee who was described as being negative. Workplace attitudes and intentions to exhibit affect-driven behaviors are impacted by employees' emotional responses to performance reviews from their managers. Supervisors routinely provide performance reviews to staff members, and these reviews can provoke a range of emotions, both positive and negative. High amounts of negative emotions might overload a leader's limited attentional resource capacity, impairing self-regulation and leading to destructive behavior. Effective self-regulation leads to constructive leadership when task difficulty is modest or when negative emotions do not overpower attentional resource capacity. (Dinh & Lord, 2012) R esponse to employee requesting reassignment- "Jane I understand that you would like to be reassigned due to some concerns with John. I appreciate you bringing this matter to my attention as I do not want my employees to feel underappreciated or not heard. It is crucial that we try to find the root cause before we take the next step in reassigning you. Can you please allow me the opportunity to talk to John so we can see if we can make this work?" Response to employee described as negative- "Good day John, there has been a query that was brought to my attention that I would like to take a moment to discuss with you. There has been word that you tend to be pessimistic at times and it has been a distraction to some of your colleagues. I am sure that you do not mean to come off that way however, I ask that you be mindful of your surroundings at all times and respect those you work with. If at any moment you feel that something is bothering you or you just need to talk, please feel free to come to me first."
