Ford 1 Oliver Ford Professor Gibson Research 201_D14 April 20, 2024 Article Analysis: Sciences Assignment College Students' Physical Activity and Health-Related Quality of Life: An Achievement Goal Perspective Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine if college student’s health related quality of life could be positively or negatively affected by physical activity. To accomplish this the study used a 2 x 2 achievement goal model which yielded four possible approaches to explaining the motivational outcome of exercise. This study used 325 university students as participants. The participants were recruited from physical activity classes offered by the university. These students completed surveys validated in previous studies to assess their achievement goals, physical activity level and health related quality of life. The data gathered from these surveys was analyzed by the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences. Unfortunately, the findings of the study did not correlate to the researchers hypothesized results causing the experiment to be a failure. The authors provided several possible limitations that may have caused the study to be inconclusive. And provided recommendations for further researchers. For quite some time health experts have recommended a certain level of physical activity should be completed weekly in order to maintain good health. Several Studies over the years have proven the effectiveness of such practices in various groups. However, such a study had not previously been completed on college students. The article under review is the first study complete on college students to determine the effects of physical activity on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Based on prior studies it is logical to assume this study will validate that physical activity has a positive effect on the health-related quality of life of college students. In recent years the Unites States has faced a large growth in the amount of obesity. To combat this health experts have been formulating the most efficient way of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, thus increasing quality of life. A large portion of the population happens to be college
Ford 2 aged individuals who are at a critical point in their lives to create long lasting healthy habits. Due to the importance of this topic Zhang Tao, Xiang Ping, Gu Xiangli, and Rose Melanie composed the article “College Students' Physical Activity and Health-Related Quality of Life: An Achievement Goal Perspective ”. The purpose of this study was to determine if regular physical activity would improve the health-related quality of life in college students. This study used two theory heavy research questions. The first question was “ What are the correlations among the 2 £ 2 achievement goal orientations, physical activity, and HRQOL among college students?” (Tao, et al.). The Second research question was “What are the unique contributions of the achievement goal orientations to college students' physical activity and HRQOL?” (Zhang, et al.). To better understand these research questions, it is important to understand the theory behind them. The researchers utilized an achievement goal theory in this article. This theory joined valence attributes of approach or avoidance with a goal attribute of mastery or performance to produce four separate theories (Hence the 2 x 2 theory form). The four resulting theories were mastery- approach and mastery-avoidance as well as performance approach and performance-avoidance. Mastery indicates a personal desire to improve or master something while performance indicates the desire to compare oneself to others. Together these four theories create research questions which produce the result of the study. This study relied on simple methods to reach its conclusion. The research method utilized in this article was quantitative as it was comprised of experimentation through surveys with numerical results. The research design used in this study was Cross-Sectional which is not directly mentioned by Hark in “Research across the disciplines: An introduction” (Hark). The scientific procedure was comprised of the participants answering short surveys which were confidential to other participants. The data was collected from the questionnaire answers of all participants. The data analysis process was completed by the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences. The data was filtered and reevaluated four times before achieving the final results. The findings of the study revealed an no relationship between mastery/performance approach of physical activity and increased HRQOL. However, the performance avoidance did correlate to lower physical activity. The original hypothesis required revision due to the variance in results. According to the path analyses section of the article “The hypothesized mediating role of
