Lesson Plan Observation and InterviewApril 6, 2024 Lesson Plan Observation and Interview By: Kimberly King This observation was done during a math lesson in the afternoon. It is a 1 st grade classroom, the number of students is13, which is a smaller number than a regular class since there are three 1 st grade classrooms and Tori has had several students move throughout the year. When I interviewed Tori before the observation, there was no nervousness from her or I, we have been colleagues for the past three years and I actually started out as an assistant in her classroom my first year. The interview went great, she had some difficulties answering some of the questions and even told me that some of the questions showed her what she needed to be doing more in her class room. I was glad to hear that as a fellow educator since I am so worried about failing my students by not being the best teacher for them. She explained that main of the things that were put in place were done by the principal and school district, which I did not know. We work in a small school district so there are many things that bigger schools do that we just do not have the teachers or funding that they have to do the things they do. When she started the lesson the first thing she did was explain to the students what they were going to be doing that day and the main reasons for doing the lesson, also known as the learning objectives and expectations. In order for her to keep her students engaged she started the lesson out on the carpet in front of her Promethean board and reviewed some of the things they would be doing before they actually started the days lesson and moved to their table for independent work. The way Mrs. Tori and Ms. Katie (assistant) did the lesson pacing was based on the students understanding, if there were students who were having trouble understanding the lesson then Ms. Katie would pull them into a small group and work more in detail with them while Mrs. Tori continued on with the lesson. When it came to the critical thinking portion of the lesson Mrs. Tori guided the students into the questions because they are still at an age where they have difficulty 1

The way she assessed the students at the end of this lesson was a quiz that they did after the lesson was done. This showed her if the students understood the lesson where she could continue to build on the basic skill of measurement and putting them in order (1.MD.A.1). When doing my interview with Mrs. Tori, I asked her the questions and of course there were several pauses because nobody likes being put on the spot and having questions asked about how they are doing their job or how they are supposed to be doing their job. Mrs. Tori is a laid back, fun teacher who wants her students to do the very best in everything that they do. Some of the answers that I have wrote down on her interview questions may seem unusual to some but to me they were honest and the way she felt about her teaching and things she needs to improve on and I hope when you look at the answers I wrote down, you do not take anything away from me. When I think about the essential components in lesson planning, I think of the learning objectives that need to be clearly defined so that the students know what they are learning about. Your lesson plan should have assessments that take place throughout the lesson and at the end so that you, the teacher, can see how the students are understand through the lesson and at the end to see if they did understand the whole thing. A teacher should always reflect on their lesson to see if they could have done things differently. When teachers are given the opportunity to have PLCs then it gives them more time to collaborate with their colleagues than their normal planning time. Most teachers get 30 mins to an hour planning time daily but sometimes that is not enough time to collaborate with other teachers and plan for their own classroom. I believe that self-reflection improves teaching because it gives the teachers time to think about how they could do things differently to better help the students understand lessons more. For my future teaching career, I plan on using a lot of the things have learned about assessment and data, to collaborating with colleagues, how to effectively write a lesson plan, and to basically have a healthy relationship with not only my students but their 2
