Effective and clear communication is essential in the healthcare industry. Poor communication in healthcare may have extremely serious consequences and can negatively affect patients’ outcomes, and it frequently results in misdiagnoses and other medical errors that can easily lead to avoidable morbidity and mortality (Bennett, 2023) . I really learned a lot about various forms of discipline, effective communication, and the various types of verbal communication. Discipline involves training or molding the mind or character to bring about desired behaviors (Kluwer, 2023). Constructive discipline helps employees grow and is used to assist employees to be self-directed in meeting goals, Destructive discipline uses threats and fear to control the behavior, while Self-discipline is where rules are internalized and become part of the employee’s personality. Self-discipline is the most effective form of discipline and should be taught in healthcare settings. I have worked in the healthcare setting for about 5 years now and have seen various forms of discipline used, appropriately and inappropriately. There was one time that an employee was disciplined for not charting correctly, and instead of pulling the employee in the office and speaking in private about what she did or didn’t do correctly, the supervisor on the floor decided to yell at her, belittle her, and embarrass her in front of all the other colleagues in the nurse’s station. This example is an inappropriate discipline technique! The supervisor should have pulled the employee in the office, spoken to her in private, not belittled her, or embarrassed her in front of all the other workers. An example of appropriate discipline was when I was pulled into the office for not charting properly, the supervisor used constructive discipline by letting me know she was proud of me for how far I have come but showed me the correct ways to chart and where to put the charting so that I wouldn’t get in trouble in the future. It was appropriate because she P a g e 1 | 3
spoke to me in private, was supportive, helped me correct my mistakes, gave me a warning, and communicated appropriately while helping me grow and understand how important it is to chart correctly. Communication is so important in any business, but in healthcare it is extremely important because without it, there would be chaos on the floor and patients wouldn’t get the correct care. Being able to discipline effectively, it serves as a roadmap for effectively managing employee performance and behavior, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, and maintaining a positive work environment .
