Ensure the use of sterile gloves, sponges, lubricants and drapes(n.d.). Using catheter systems with preconnected and sealed catheter-tubing. Use higher quailty meterials to help with prevention of infections. Prevention Checking patients catheters at a minimum of twice a day. Properly cleaning your hands, patient and work area before placing catheters(n.d.). Provide quarterly training for staff on infection prevention and urinary catheter management. Making sure that catheter tubing and bags, are always below the bladder and are off the floor(n.d.). What is it? Nosocomial Urinary Infection is when a Urinary Track Infection(UTI) happens within a healthcare facility and is related to patient management(Lacovelli, 2014). This means that infections can lead to patients having prostatitis, cystitis and pyelonephritis. Causes 80% of all UTI’s are caused by indwelling urethal catheters. Are neglected compared to other infections, due to its low mortality rate(Nicolle, 2008). Unsterile placement of catheters and prolonged use of a urinary catheter.
