Plate Tectonics: One of the fundamental concepts in geology is plate tectonics, which explains the movement of the Earth's lithosphere—the rigid outer shell divided into tectonic plates. According to the theory of plate tectonics, these plates float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them and move in response to heat convection currents. As plates interact at their boundaries, they can converge, diverge, or slide past each other, leading to various geological features such as mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes (Condie, 2016).
