PLEASE NOTE: SINCE COVID, OBSERVATION ARRANGEMENTS MAY BE PREDOMINANTLY VIRTUAL THIS SEMESTER. IF THAT IS THE CASE, PLEASE MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AS YOU READ THE SYLLABUS INFORMATION COURSE REQUIREMENTS Each student will complete: 1. Attendance at and participation with your seminar lectures. Because this is an online synchronous course, you are required to be present with cameras on for each remote face-to- face/synchronous meeting. 2. Twenty-five observation reports (representing 25 contact hours which satisfy the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) requirements towards the required 400 contact hours.) The timely completion of each report is an essential part of your grade. The form will be available on Blackboard. Location: The facility and/or practitioner must be ASHA certified. Observations may be made either at the Lehman Clinic or an ASHA certified facility or an approved facility by your instructor Sessions : It is recommended that you observe both children and adults with speech and hearing disorders. All sessions at most sites, except for elementary schools, are considered a “clinical hour”. At elementary schools, they are generally ½ hour, so you will be combining two half hour sessions into one report. No need to write them up as ½ hour reports, and thus do more than 25. Reports: Complete the report on the Lehman College Speech- Language Hearing Center Observation form (on class Blackboard) from each session and have your log signed by an SLP/AUD who holds the Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC) Cover sheet : Each report must have the cover sheet attached to it. Due dates : to be discussed in class Questions to be answered in each report : Each report must list and answer the following questions: 1. What were the short-term targets and expected outcomes of the treatment session? 2. Fully describe the session , and include the following within your narrative: a. What materials and activities were used? b. What elements of “the practitioner’s path” (using the terminology from your textbook) were evidenced? Please highlight the terminology as you use it in your narrative to describe the therapy session. Use the textbook roadmap to assist . For example, how did incorporating specific principles of reflection, counsel and care, balance and harmony, growth, and/or detachment support the therapy session? 3. Were the goals for this therapy session achieved? If yes, how do you know (describe outcomes and data). Prof. Papir Bernstein SPV 430 Clinical Methods and Supervised Observation 3
