Observation Paper #2:
You are to visit a retail store of any type that works on commission. You are to enter the store
with the nonverbal signs of intent to buy a product, although do not purchase the product unless
you want it. Prepare the following analysis:
1)...Was there a need for the salesclerk to use immediacy behaviors? Why or why not?
Immediacy behaviors in a retail environment, especially one that operates on commission, are crucial for salesclerks to establish rapport and trust with potential customers. These behaviors, which include a range of nonverbal cues such as eye contact, facial expressions, and gestures, help to create a sense of closeness and personal attention. She was definitely using them!
2)...If so, what immediacy behaviors did the salesclerk use?
Nonverbal immediacy behaviors used included maintaining eye contact, using gestures,
and smiling, which convey attention and friendliness. Verbal immediacy behaviors involved were inclusive language such as "we" and employing a tone that is warm and engaging. She had her best “customer service” voice on! These behaviors help to build trust and make customers feel valued, increasing the likelihood of a sale.
3)...Did the interpersonal immediacy behaviors used by the salesclerk help
to sell the product to you? (Or would they if you had actually be interested in buying the product?)
I went into the store for the sole purpose of this assignment. I chose a store that I do not usually shop at and had no interest in what they sell. But I wanted to get a real feel of the salesperson, rather than focus on what they could sell to me. The salesperson was immediately asking if I was looking for anything specific. While
I told her I wanted to look around for a bit first, she pretty much followed me the entire time. She was too eager to make a sale for my taste. I asked a second time to
just look around for a bit, and she was adamant about what I wanted to look for. I made up an item of interest and she looked a bit annoyed, as I asked if they a bathroom vanity. She informed me that Citi Trends was a fashion store. I ended up telling her that this was an assignment for class and she was rather embarrassed and then a little ticked off. I will not be going back.
4)...Was the salesclerk interpersonally attractive and was it a factor in your decision to buy?
