SAMR
Substitutio
n
I have a basic
understanding of
substitution and
can somewhat
explain the basic
idea.
Substitution means using
technology as a direct
replacement for something
without changing how it's
used.
For example, without
changing the task the
student
uses a computer to
type a document instead of
writing it with pen and
paper.
Augmentati
on
I know this
concept and I
can explain it.
I have a basic idea
of the concept and
can explain it in
one or two
sentences.
With augmentation you
use technology to improve
a task by digitizing it,
adding some functional
improvements along the
way.
Modificatio
n
I have a basic idea
of the concept and
can explain it in
one or two
sentences.
The lesson design or
outcome is altered through
the use of interactive tasks.
For example, with
podcasts the student can
create it and other students
can use it as a study guide.
Redefinitio
n
I have a basic idea
of the concept and
can explain it in
one or two
sentences.
I know this topic and can
describe redefinition as
using technology to make
more learning
opportunities possible.

Complete the knowledge rating scale and answer the question below:
2) In what ways are TPACK and SAMR different?
TPACK (Technological, Pedagogical, Content Knowledge)
SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition)
Both TPACK and SAMR have different focuses when it comes to aspects of technology integration in
teaching and learning.
SAMR:
●
SAMR focuses on how technology is used in teaching and assesses how much technology helps
with learning tasks.
●
SAMR has four levels of integration: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and
Redefinition.
●
It helps teachers see how much technology they use and aims to use more for higher levels of
technology integration within lessons.
