ComSDis 490 Spring 2024 Due: February 27, 2024 by 11:59 pm. Assignment: Speech Intelligibility Index and Predicting Speech Perception Goals: 1. To learn how to use the Speech Intelligibility Index to predict speech audibility 2. To use basic knowledge of speech acoustics predict speech perception challenges Instructions: Use the attached cartoon and the audiometric information provided to answer the questions below. Each student will turn in a clearly organized response containing the following information: 1.Calculation of the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII): Plot the audiometric data provided below on the count-the-dot audiogram provided with this assignment. Calculate the SII score and Determine the anticipated percentage of average speech that is audible for monosyllabic words (NU6 words) 2. Predict Speech Perception Errors: In the cartoon provided, assume the man in the water has a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss per the thresholds above. Assume the woman is stating “Shark” at a normal conversational level. Use Phoneme Acoustic and Frequency Composition information to predict the speech perception errors that may occur. You may wish to reference your text pages 98 & 99; and other provided info ie: formant charts; AB HandOut; and the “Rainbow Audiogram”. Answer the following questions: Be sure to Justify your answers. A. Would this man have difficulty detecting vowels? Identifying vowels? State 2 additional acoustic features of speech this person is expected to have access and 2 that access is not expected. Justify your answer. B. Discuss why “lark” is not an expected speech perception error. Justify your answer by including acoustic analysis of phonemes. C. Based upon the acoustic information that is audible to the man in the water, state what the man likely perceived of the message in the thought bubble. Support your response by including acoustic analysis of the content.
