Some readers dislike this term when used for other than the theater, but modern journalism finds it handy to describe heavily contrived photo opportunities and other carefully orchestrated appearances of public figures, and the transferred sense of the theatrical verb seems so apt that it has become Standard in this more generalized use.  1
