| Urban refers generally to cities and their characteristics, as in The environment was urban rather than rural or suburban, but it also has a specialized American sense, designating any place of fifty thousand or more inhabitants, as in Its not a large town, but it classifies as urban in the census. Urbane means courteous, polished, refined and is used to describe a persons manners: He was an impressive, urbane sort of man. | 1 |
