urban, urbane (adjs.)

Urban refers generally to cities and their characteristics, as in The environment was urban rather than rural or suburban, but it also has a specialized American sense, designating any place of fifty thousand or more inhabitants, as in It’s not a large town, but it classifies as urban in the census. Urbane means “courteous, polished, refined” and is used to describe a person’s manners: He was an impressive, urbane sort of man.  1
