satellite (adj., n.)

Some people used to object to this word’s figurative use, particularly as applied to hangers-on, but although a satellite is still a natural or man-made object revolving around a planet in space, its meanings have also generalized and respecialized, particularly in world political affairs. Until recently, journalism couldn’t have discussed Eastern Europe without the figurative use of the word satellite.  1
